Gaited Horse
There has been much confusion regarding registration of the Peruvian Horse (aka Peruvian Paso). Prior to 2005 there were two National Peruvian Paso organizations: PPHRNA (Peruvian Paso Horse Registry of North America) and AAOBPPH (American Association of Owners and Breeders of Peruvian Paso Horses). Both organizations registered horses and maintained a stud book; had a board of directors, bylaws, and rules; pointed regional horse shows, gave out awards to horses competing; and conducted their own national horse show. For years there was talk amongst the Peruvian Horse owners of a merger between the two organizations. That talk became a reality and NAPHA (North American Peruvian Horse Association) was formed. NAPHA accepts into its registry all horses already registered with the AAOBPPH, PPHRNA, ANCPCPP and PHAC (Peruvian Horse Association of Canada). Registrations of previously nonregistered horses or foals occur in accordance with the written policies of NAPHA, which includes DNA testing and Parental Verification.
The following appeared on the NAPHA web site: “June 30, 2007 was a memorable day in the history of the Peruvian Horse. The North American Horse Association and the Asociacion Nacional de Criadores y Propietarios de Caballo Peruano de Paso (A.N.C.P.C.P.P.), the association in Peru signed an agreement in Las Vegas, NV mutually recognizing each other’s registries. This is a tremendous accomplishment for our two registries” noted NAPHA president, Linda Virgin. “We are looking forward to working closely with Peru in our efforts to gain world wide recognition for our horse.”
The A.N.C.P.C.P.P recognizes NAPHA as the sole entity in the USA authorized to issue Registration of the Peruvian Horse.” For a complete copy of this agreement please go to the NAPHA website htpp://napha.net
Who is the A.N.C.P.C.P.P. ? From the agreement mentioned above “The A.N.C.P.C.P.P. is the entity officially recognized by the Republic of Peru as the representative of the breed in preserving the integrity of the “Peruvian Horse” originated in Peru; thereby has the authority to provide rules and regulations that will allow it to preserve, improve and promote the breed nationally and abroad. The ANCPCPP is also in charge of the Registration of Peruvian Horses as recognized by the Peruvian Government’s Law #26606”
If you are buying a registered Peruvian Horse you must do the following:
Ask the owner to see the original copy of the registration for the horse. Make sure the horse’s name and the owner as reported by the seller are in agreement. Some people have sold horses for which they were not listed as the rightful owners. Some owners when buying a horse never get the registration papers transferred and the listed owner of record is the original owner. Currently NAPHA requires the seller send in the registration certificate to transfer the registration certificate to the new owner. The new owner will receive a registration naming the horse, its breeder, its birthdate, its sire and dam, any markings and the new owner as the listed owner.
Make sure the registration certificate is from the organizations listed above: NAPHA, PPHRNA, AAOBPPH, PHAC, or ANCPCPP.
If the owner tells you the registration papers are pending, call NAPHA and make sure that they are indeed pending.
Make sure you have a sales contract that states the horse is registered, its full registered name, and its registration number.
