Eight 3-year-olds with aspirations to the Kentucky Derby, will try a more modest stepping stone Saturday in the $100,000 Turf Paradise Derby. Eight fillies will also be in the spotlight in the $75,000 Arizona Oaks.
The local Derby will be run at 1 1/16 miles while the Oaks will be contested at one mile.
Although two horses will be shipping in from California local hopeful Ez Dreamer will be the one to beat in the Derby with leading stakes rider Glenn Corbett aboard. Owned by Phoenix-based Triple AAA Ranch and trained by Kory Owens, Ez Dreamer has won half of his six career efforts, including a recent ten-length romp in the Rattlesnake Stakes.
Shipping in from the west coast is Irish-bred Meer Cat (Ire) for trainer Craig Dollase. After breaking his maiden in Great Britain, Meer Cat turned in a credible American debut, by finishing third in Hollywood Park’s Generous Stakes (G3) on November 23.
Corbett will look to sweep both stakes with Pure and Simple in the Oaks. Trained by Molly Pearson, Pure and Simple was a runaway winner in her most recent start, the Sun Devil Stakes on January 19.
Three-race winner La Mina, ships in from California after winning Santa Anita’s Hidden Light and Golden Gate’s Corte Madera Stakes.
