2008 NRCHA Stakes Open Finalists Decided

The 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes preliminary competition concluded as the field of 96 was narrowed to twenty Friday, March 28, after the cow work.

The exhibitors had already competed in the herd and rein work, and the only hurdle that remained was the always-exciting cow work. Even though there are three phases of competition, everyone knows that getting to the finals hinges on how it comes together going down the fence.

2007 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Reserve Champion Lance Johnston piloted Starlight Silk, owned by Mary Stroud, to a score of 223 to lead the class. Starlight Silk is by Junior Starlight and out of Montana Silk. That score secured the pair a spot in the Open finals.

In the Intermediate Open division, Tucker Robinson rode Days Zanolena, owned by Matt Day, to a score of 221 to top the class. Robinson and Days Zanolena, by Smart Zanolena and out of Chex Out This Day, were the 2007 NRCHA Derby Open Champions.

And in the Limited Open division, it was all about Brad Lund, who rode three of the top four horses. He led the division with a 215 on Garth and Amanda Gardner’s Diamonds With Style. He took second on Solena Cielo, owned by Mark Arns and Mike Wilson, with a 212.5, and tied for third on Stylish Peanut, owned by Michael and Suzanne O Donnell.

The Open finals should prove exciting. Former Snaffle Bit Futurity Champions Oh Cay N Short and Smart Crackin Chic made it back to the finals, along with NRCHA Derby Champion Docs Soula, and NRCHA Hackamore Classic Champion Days Zanolena.

It took a 643.5 to make the Open finals, while a 630 was the magic number in the Intermediate division, and a 624 garnered a finals berth in the Limited Open.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and GASTROGARD, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry. For information on the National Reined Cow Horse Association, call 580-759-4949 or visit the NRCHA Official Web Site at www.nrcha.com.
