Marc Bourdet was the very last rider in the cow work of the NRCHA Stakes Non Pro Finals, so he knew exactly what he had to do when he rode into the arena at the Idaho Horse Park on Sunday afternoon. Anne Reynolds on Very Smart Flo Jo and Michelle Cowan on Wheres My Shine, were tied for the lead at a composite score of 645.5.

Bourdet put together a solid 214.5 point run that, when added to his herd and rein work scores of 221 and 212, respectively, clinched the title by two points. Relief and excitement were both evident as soon as the run was completed and the score announced.

“I’m glad it’s over,” he said, and then added, “I was just trying to keep my head. Jake Gorrell told me earlier, before I rode, ‘it’s all position’ and so I was trying to stay focused and think about what I needed to do.”

Bourdet’s teammate, CD Precious Peppy, is a 5-year-old mare sired by CD Olena and out of Splash A Lil Cash. “We bought Margie as a 2-year-old at Fort Worth and went from there,” Marc explained. This is his first major limited age event win and his quiet smile and excited eyes said it all.

At the end of the day, he was $12,316 richer and also received a Bob’s Custom Saddle, a Gist custom buckle, a C.R. Morrison NRCHA trophy and commemorative medallion.

Marc plans to show the good mare next year in the bridle and was quick to thank everyone who helped him make the win. “Jake Gorrell and Russell Dilday had both given me advice and I was trying to get though it without disappointing them. They’ve both been a great deal of help to me and I wanted to show them how much it meant.”

The 2008 NRCHA Stakes Co-Reserve Non Pro Championship went to Michelle Cowan riding Wheres My Shine (Shining Spark X Boomerita) and Anne Reynolds on Very Smart Flo Jo (Very Smart Remedy X Teena Cash Flo) and each earned $8,835.

Bar H Ranch, owner of CD Olena, received the $2,000 Stakes Non Pro Sire Award for CD Precious Peppy’s win and the Reserve Non Pro Sire award went to Carol Rose for Shining Spark having sired Wheres My Shine and to Anne Reynolds, owner of Very Smart Remedy, sire of Very Smart Flo Jo. Each received $500.

Kathy Wilson of Clarksburg, California was ecstatic about her NRCHA Stakes Intermediate Non Pro Championship win with Sis Is Smart. Wilson purchased “Sis” as a 2-year-old from Jody and Jack Elliot. Helped by trainer Ken and Ramona Wold, Wilson has done really well with Sis since her comeback from a hiatus after her earlier Non Pro success.

Wilson is a three time NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Champion, and showed at her first major event, the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, in 1977. After slowing down for a bit and showing at some smaller shows, Wilson was craving the challenge. “It has become so competitive and there are so many great riders and horses out there.

“I felt that same challenge in the prelims here at the Stakes. I felt Sis sort of taking it slow and I didn’t push her, but I knew if I wanted to win, I needed to step it up and get aggressive in the finals. Ken Wold schooled me earlier on my rein work and I really tried to carry those pointers and encouragement over into my cow work.”

Sis Is Smart is a 5-year-old bay mare sired by Ill Be Smart and out of Sis Royal Mahogany. Wilson plans to show the mare at the 2008 NRCHA Hackamore Classic in Paso Robles, California and then in the bridle in the following year. She noted, “I would like to thank my parents for the beautiful facility at which I am able to ride and my family for all of their support. I am truly blessed.”

Bubba Petty earned the 2008 NRCHA Stakes Reserve Intermediate Non Pro Championship, after almost getting on a plane to fly home because he thought he didn’t make the finals. Petty received a check for $3,937, a Gist Custom Buckle and a C.R. Morrison Commemorative Medallion.

The Intermediate Non Pro Champion Sire Award of $1,000 was earned by Ill Be Smart, sire of Sis Is Smart, and went to Atwood Quarter Horses.
