Working Cowhorse
The 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes, held March 26-30 at the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa, Idaho, not only features the headline 4-and 5-year-old event. It also has a horse show with a full-slate of NRCHA approved classes that provide a chance for different stages of horses, from hackamore to bridle horses, to show. One important step – and class – is the Two Rein, which is the transitional stage between the hackamore and bridle.
Winning the Open Two Rein class at Nampa was Shady Lil Starlight and Jake Telford, who earned a 431 total to lead the class. Barely a month earlier, they won the 2007 NRCHA Open Hackamore World Championship.
“This doesn’t happen that often. To win two major events back to back is great,” said the Caldwell, Idaho, trainer.
The win was even more special because Shady Lil Starlight’s owner, Nancy Crawford-Hall of Holy Cow Performance Horses, was on hand at the Idaho Center to watch her horse. “Nancy is a great person – and a great owner,” noted Telford. Crawford-Hall received a check for $1,500 and a C.R. Morrison trophy for her horse’s performance.
By Grays Starlight and out of Shady Lil Cat, Shady Lil Starlight also won the Reserve Open Hackamore Championship at the 2007 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. Telford plans to continue showing the stallion in the Two Rein this year, and predicts he will eventually be a great bridle horse.
John Ward, of Kingsburg, California, won the Reserve Championship on Miss Smokin It with a 423 total. The reserve title garnered a check for $1,250. Miss Smokin It, by Smart Little Pepinic and out of Miss Smokin Leo, has won over $25,000 in NRCHA competition.
The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and GASTROGARD, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
