Appaloosa mare, Treats On Me, sped past her colorful competition to claim first place in the 350-yard allowance race at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., Mar. 23. The allowance race offered a purse of $9,000.
Treats On Me, a 3-year-old Appaloosa mare, ran across the finish line and into the winner’s circle in 18.190 seconds. The Utah-bred Appaloosa drew off under Tony Bennett to win $5,220, bringing her lifetime earnings to $10,240. Treats On Me is by Phoebes Cartel (AQHA), and out of Feleshas Treat (APHC), by Cash Treat (AQHA).Treats On Me is proudly owned by Bob G. Shannon of Fort Gibson, Okla., was bred by Kevin Hullinger and is trained by Frank Cooper.
While Rapid Riley, a 3-year-old Paint Horse gelding, was easily outfinished, the gelding earned second place by completing the track in 18.287 seconds and won $1,740. Rapid Riley is owned and trained by Richard Harper, and was ridden by Jay Jsames.
Following in third was Not So Sweet, a 4-year-old Paint Horse mare. She completed the track in 18.302 seconds. The Paint Horse mare won $957. Not So Sweet is owned by Billy and Tammy Ketchum, is trained by Billy Ketchum and was ridden by Agustin Rodriguez.
Other horses who completed the field include Two Cents Worth (APHA), Streaknow (ApHC), Pocket Full of Bugs (ApHC) , Barnes Lineage (APHA), Sparky Double Dash (APHA), I Wanta Be First (APHA) and I Need Help Two (APHA).
Appaloosa Racing
Appaloosas have long been an integral part of one of America’s most popular spectator sports—horse racing. The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) officially recognized the sport in 1962, beginning Appaloosa racing history with four races and 23 starters competing for $12,000 in total purses. In 2006, 203 starters competed in 440 races for $2,904,774 in total purses.
Racing fans can find Appaloosas crossing the finish line in Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
