Registration Incentive means huge savings on APHA transactions

The newest benefit to joining and becoming an active member of the American Paint Horse Association is to save money. For a limited time, APHA is offering members significant savings on transactions through the Registration Incentive program.

Registering Older Horses

The incentive allows a discounted registration fee for Paint Horses 2 years old and older, and is available for both Regular Registry and Solid Paint-Breds. APHA encourages owners to take advantage of the opportunity to register older Paint Horses at a greatly reduced rate and save up to $400.
Current Fees Weanling Yearling 2YO 3YO+ Registration
Incentive Rate
Regular Registry $20 / $25 / $35 $75 $250 $500 $100
($150 / $400 svgs)
Solid Paint-Bred $15 $50 $50 $100 $50
($50 svgs)

Discounts are also being offered on multiple transfers, while a number of certificate corrections are being offered at no charge.

Look over your horses’ registration certificates at this time and submit any updates to APHA to bring your records and the association’s current. For more information on these limited-time savings, visit apha.com or call (817) 834-2742.

Paint World GamesGet involved with Paint World Games
SCHEDULE CHANGE – Paint World Games Classes will now be taking place on Thursday, June 26 starting at 10:00 am.

As 2008 is an Olympic year, it is especially fitting that it also marks the third international Youth competition, the Paint World Games. This competition, to be held Thursday, June 26, will feature Youth representing their country in four divisions: trail, showmanship, horsemanship and reining.

Teams will be assigned horses at the show and have a limited, supervised amount of time to work with their horses before competition begins.

This program runs entirely off of donations from generous APHA members and sponsors. If you would like to get involved in a worthwhile program that fosters good international relations at the Youth level, please let us know. Providing horses for the competition, donating money and offering free farm tours for the visiting teams are all ways to become involved.

For more information, visit aphaworldshow.com, or contact the Director of Youth Activities at (817) 834-2742, extension 248, or via e-mail.

If you are interested in singing or doing a performance of some kind to the National Anthem, drill pattern on horseback, salute to the flag, etc, please contact Jennifer Frye.

Arena SingerPerformance Opportunities
If you have a Paint Horse that has WORLD CLASS TALENT, we’d love to know about it! We have opportunities for performances at our World Show and one might be just for you and your talented horse.

Opportunities range from a training/teaching atmosphere where the “talent” is hosting clinics and seminars to more performance/show oriented opportunities. The Paint Horse is the best breed in the world and we want to make that evident at this year’s World Show!

If you have a horse that could play a part, please contact Jennifer Frye and let us know what your special Paint can do!

Peppilenas GaybarCheck out this filly's moves

The filly in the AjPHA and Foundation fundraiser was bred to be a champion.

If you have been looking for a colorful cow-savvy filly with impeccable bloodlines, don’t miss the chance to win this filly, to be given away soon by the American Junior Paint Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Foundation.

The Foundation will present Peppilenas Gaybar, a stunning weanling tovero filly, to her new owner on July 5, during the final night of the APHA World Championship Paint Horse Show in Fort Worth, Texas.

The pedigree of a champion
Take one look at Peppilenas Gaybar’s pedigree and it is easy to see she was bred to be a champion. Sired by Gay Bar Delta Doc and out of Gay Bars Peppilena, the filly is a descendant of Delta Flyer, who was the foundation of the Paint performance horse program at 6-J Paint Horses. The 1986 NCHA Super Stakes Open Champion and earner of $260,670, Delta Flyer can be seen on the filly’s sire and dam pedigrees. Delta Flyer is the only Paint Horse with both sire and dam in the NCHA Hall of Fame.

The filly’s champion bloodlines don’t stop there. Her pedigree also includes APHA World Champion and NCHA money earner Delta Olena, as well as APHA World and Reserve World Champion reining horse Gay Bar O Lena.

APHA would like to thank Floyd and MaryAnn Moore for their generous support. This is the fifth consecutive year that the Moores, owners of 6-J Paint Horses in Huntsville, Texas, have donated a filly to benefit AjPHA.

Donations for a chance to win the filly are only $10 and can be made on-line at aphfoundation.org.

Paint flows into Guinness Book of World Records

JJS Summer Breeze The Guinness Book of World Records has just registered, at the end of January, JJS Summer Breeze as having the longest horse's tail at 12.5 feet.

There's nothing fake in the image you see. Tail extensions are excluded. This exceptional horse has such a long tail that it cannot wear it freely outside the arena, but braided and covered in a white tube sock, so that the animal does not sweep the ground with it.

But the gentle "Summer" is well known at EquiFest, occurring each year at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita, for her long tail. The mare, now 11 years old, has been displayed there since a filly. Summer was born with a normal-sized tail, but at some point its growth boomed.

The extremely long mane would enter the mare's mouth when she ate, that's why it is partially chewed off. The mane too could be a record, but the owners barely considered registering the horse for her tail in the Guinness Book.

Owner Crystal Socha combs out and shampoos Summer's tail once every two months, and the operation takes three hours. Each hair strand has the consistency of fishing line.

"I don't think I've ever gotten every knot out of that tail. It takes a lot longer in the summer when she's flicking at flies. When it's out and it's flowing, then I know why it's worth it," said Crystal.

The tail is braided in 10 minutes.

Got Country Grip makes racing history

Got Country GripGot Country Grip made racing history on March 27 when he won his 16th consecutive lifetime race to tie the North American record for all breeds. On the day before the race, APHA's Marketing and Public Relations department sent out a news release that was picked up by the Associated Press (AP). Ride America® member earns 10,000-hour award

Ride AmericaAPHA’s Ride America® program honored its newest 10,000-hour rider—Chuck Stuart of Tuttle, Okla.—during an APHA show in Oklahoma City, Okla., in late March. The rider logged the remarkable time on his Paint Horse Pretty And Cool, making him the second-ever participant to reach that level of excellence since the program’s inception in 1992. For his achievement, Stuart was presented with a custom Gist Silversmiths belt buckle from APHA President Carl Thurow.

Judys Lineage becomes Paint racing’s newest $3 million sire

Hart LogoReaching the $3 million sire mark is a rare accomplishment in just about every equine discipline; however Paint racing has seen two stand-out sires surpass this feat within the last four months. Judys Lineage recently joined Texas Hero to become the second $3 million sire in Paint racing history.

Nineteen-year-old Judys Lineage has been a force to be reckoned with since his first year on the track. In only two years as a racehorse, the sorrel tobiano Paint stallion ran in 15 races, earning 9 victories and $45,448 in earnings. At the end of his 3-year-old, and last, race season, Judys Lineage was aptly named 1992 Champion Running 3-Year-Old and Champion Running 3-Year-Old Colt.

PHJ News

BluebonnetWanted: Wildflowers
The Paint Horse Journal is creating a database of good places to shoot seasonal photos of Paint Horses. To start this project off, we are looking for farms with Paint Horses and big fields of wildflowers for some generic spring photos. If your farm fits the bill, send an email to Laura Jesberg describing your farm, horses, kind(s) of wildflower(s) and approximately when they are in bloom. If you have photos, please send them along too.

Farms within a 300-mile radius of Fort Worth will be considered first for this year (because we would need to photograph in the next few weeks), but the database will be essential for future shoots, and will allow us to possibly do multi-photo sessions in certain locations. For instance, we might send a writer/photographer to interview a trainer in North Carolina and, on the same trip, shoot some fall seasonal shots because several members in the state have let us know they have beautiful fall color at their farms.

So if you have pretty spring flowers, lush summer pastures, maple-lined lanes or snowy vistas AND Paint Horses to feature in the scenery, let us know.

Did you know that, in addition to writing and photographing the features, articles and columns for the Paint Horse Journal each month, our editorial staff also creates all the content for three other APHA publications—the quarterly APHA Connection, bi-monthly Paint Racing magazine and quarterly Generation j?

Help the Connection answer this member's question:

I just started working with a mostly brown and white Paint. What coat cleaners work the best and are the safest?
—Franny from Illinois

Send your answers and suggestions to PHJ Managing Editor Jessica Smith.

RodeoHoustonSundays Trotter was the eye-catching Paint at the head of the RODEOHOUSTON Grand Entry each night during its three-week run in March.

Owned by Louis M. Pearce, Jr., the eighth President of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and cutting horse breeder, Sundays Trotter was ridden in each Grand Entry in Reliant Stadium by current President and CEO Skip Wagner.

RODEOHOUSTON is the richest regular-season rodeo in the world, offering a purse in 2007 of $1.275 million. In 2007, a total of 1,176,436 tickets were sold for the 20 rodeo/concert performances. If 2008 numbers are similar, that's a lot of people watching an American Paint Horse lead the parade.

Laura Jesberg, part of APHA's marketing staff, was invited to represent APHA in the Grand Entry the final weekend of the Rodeo. She distributed Paint Horse trading cards to children visiting the Reliant Center sculpture garden prior to the March 21 Rodeo performance.

Reata Hospital logo Equine Podiatry Conference

Reata Equine Hospital, a seven-doctor referral hospital located in Weatherford, Texas, is hosting a Texas Equine Podiatry Conference on Friday and Saturday, June 6 and 7, 2008, in Weatherford, Texas. The plan is for this conference to become an annual event.

The conference will be presented along with the grand opening of The Podiatry Center at Reata, the only north Texas facility specifically dedicated to the treatment of diseases and lameness associated with the foot. Equine lameness associated with the foot has been an area of intense practice and focus for many areas of the country especially the racehorse industry in Kentucky. However, Texas and the Western performance industry have been lacking in focus on this facet of veterinary medicine. We are proud to host several international speakers on the subject and are providing continuing education for 150 veterinarians and farriers from all over the country.

The speakers are world-renowned veterinarians/farriers Dr. Scott Morrison or Bob Agne, DVM, CF of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital; Dr. Ric Redden, DVM, CF of the International Equine Podiatry Center; Gene Ovnicek, RMF of Equine Digit Support Systems and Natural Balance; Dr. Robert Cole, DVM, DACVR of Animal Imaging Center; Dr. Bo Brock, DVM of Brock Veterinary Hospital; and Dr. Britt Conklin, DVM, CF of Reata Equine Hospital.

The Friday conference meeting will be held at the Doss Heritage and Cultural Center in Weatherford, Texas, and the Saturday wet labs/demonstrations will be located at Reata Equine Hospital.
