It’s that time of year again—time to pack up the Appaloosas and gear and head out on a wilderness adventure. The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) offers members four week-long trail rides in some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the United States.
The ApHC trail season kicks off May 4-10 with the Apache Land Trail Ride at the Z Lazy B Ranch in New Mexico. Participants and their equine pals will explore tall pine forests and meadows of the Zuni Mountains in the Cibola National Forest. The ApHC is proud to have hosted this ride for 25 years!
The Land of Liberty Trail Ride June 15-21 is a ride the entire family can enjoy! The location for this year’s ride is at Big Elk Lick Campground near Benezette, Penn., heart of Elk County and home of the largest wild herd of wapiti, the cree word for “elk”, east of the Mississippi. Participants will ride in hardwood forests and wade across Trout Run. Application deadline for this exciting, family ride is May 16.
The third ride of the year is the famous Chief Joseph Trail Ride, one of the most historical rides in the United States. Since 1964, the ride has retraced as closely as possible the 1,350-mile trek the Nez Perce made during their flight from the U.S. Cavalry in 1877. This year the ride will start at Lolo Hot Springs and pass through the beautiful Bitterroot valley to beyond Stevensville, Mont.. Application deadline for this historic ride is June 20.
The ApHC trail ride season concludes with the Sheltowee Trail Ride in Kentucky. The ride is close to the Wilderness Trail, which is the route Daniel Boone came through Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. There are numerous other attractions in this area including Cumberland Falls State Park, the Rockcastle River, a designated wild river, the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Corbin and, of course, the magnificent Daniel Boone National Forest. Application deadline for this trail ride is Aug. 29.

The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) was established in 1938, with a mission of preserving, promoting and enhancing the Appaloosa breed. The ApHC has since registered more than 670,000 Appaloosas, which are known for their distinctive color, intelligence and even temperament. True to their reputation as an extremely versatile breed, Appaloosas can be found in nearly every discipline, including racing, endurance riding or serving as reliable family horses. The international breed registry is headquartered in Moscow, Idaho; the heart of the Palouse region, the Appaloosa breed’s namesake and point of origin.
