Arizona
Hello, my name is Rebecca Johnson and I am the 2008 Gilbert Days Rodeo Teen Queen. The Gilbert Days Royalty has already started this year out in full swing. We have been to several Rodeo’s and parades, and have several more functions on our calendars just for April. We have met some amazing people and have made many new friends. We are having the times of our lives; it is such an honor to be a part of the western way of life and to be able to help others.
The weather is fantastic it is the time to be outside and the pools are starting to warm up. It is time to have picnics and BBQ’s, everyone is putting on their swim suits and going swimming. It just so happens that April is also the month for the annual walk for water safety which is an event that has volunteers go door to door to distribute drowning prevention information and lifeguard whistles throughout the East Valley, and is put on by Banner Children’s Hospital, SRP, the Water Safety Coalition and East Valley firefighters.
The Gilbert Rodeo Royalty had the honor of joining in with many other volunteers to help put the lifeguard whistles and cards together to go in a bag that had water safety tips for households, so that they could be distributed. There were over 200 volunteers and 50, 000 bags distributed. It is very fulfilling to be able to help in such a worth while event. The more information and education that can be passed along, the safer children (and adults) will be. It amazed me when I was researching this topic that there have been so many drowning incidents in Arizona. Check out the Phoenix.gov site regarding water safety and drowning prevention. So remember, go out have a good time but remember some key rules: Never swim alone and know where your children are at all times. It only takes seconds for someone to drown. I look forward to seeing you at the rodeos.
