Havens Schatt not only had an All the Answers victory in the Pro 3’ Go Round and Finals, but she also dominated the Pro 3’6” Finals with Glass Castle and earned the Walter J. Lee Perpetual Trophy going to the professional rider winning the most money. Glass Castle’s owner, Shaw Johnson Price, was awarded with the Belcort Farm Perpetual Trophy because her horse produced the highest single round score (262). She totaled $12,323 in winnings. Rio Renoir, owned by Brad Wolf and ridden by Emily Williams, won the Pro 3’6” Go Round.

In the Restricted Pro 3’ Finals Loretta Mayer claimed the victory on Mutch De Lothain owned by Sarah Porter, while Papillon Rouge ridden by McKrell Painter took the Go Round. Motion Picture with Jennifer Papiernik aboard claimed the victory in the Pro 3’6” Restricted Finals, while Skylar, also ridden by Mayer, won the Go Round. Real Magic, owned by Gary Duffy and ridden by Rob Bielefeld, accumulated the most points to earn the Pre Green Incentive Honors.

Amelia McArdle was giddy after winning the Non Pro 3’6” Finals on MVP, which was a combined class of Juniors and Amateurs. She won the Junior Finals as well as the Leading Non Pro 3’6” Rider honors and was awarded the Signature Trophy. Lavari ridden by Tracy Scheriff won the Non Pro 3’6” Amateur Finals and Leading Amateur Rider award, collecting the Jeannie Geiger Memorial Trophy. Emily Wygod and North Shore were the big winners in the Non Pro 3’ Go Round, Finals and Amateurs. Jennifer Waxman and Ulone won the Non Pro 3’ Junior Finals.
Brittni Raflowitz, 13, was glowing after winning the Pony Hunter Go Round winning the Farney Eiffel Tower Memorial Trophy, and Finals (Delta Dawn Perpetual Trophy) and the Leading Pony Rider title on Mind Your Step. Havens Schatt won the Leading Trainer Award after she and her students totaled $10,424.
The two-week Legacy Cup took place May 8th-17th as part of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows in Lexington.
PRO 3’6” DIVISION
Glass Castle was the final charm for the judges in the Pro 3’6” Finals. In the end Schatt would finish first (Glass Castle), second (Just Jack) and third (Costello). While the Ocala, FL resident was delighted with her win, owner Shaw Johnson Price, was quick to talk about the nine-year-old, dark bay, 16.2H, Belgian Warmblood mare. “She is always happy,” explained Price.”
Rio Renoir, winner of the Pro 3’6” Go Round “is complete quality and a real pleasure to ride.” In the end Williams, who set a record by taking Strapless to three consecutive wins in the annual AHJF Hunter Classic in Wellington, FL, again rose to the top of the class.
A gleeful Papiernik, Wellington, FL, happily claimed her championship ribbon after winning the Pro 3’6” Restricted Finals on Motion Picture, a nine-year-old, 15.3H, chestnut, Thoroughbred gelding. “He is very shy in the barn. Most of my horses are a little obnoxious but he is very patient and polite,” explained Papiernik.
Mayer, Chestnut Ridge, NY, was floating after her win in the Go Round. “Skylar is really unflappable,” explained Mayer about the 10-year-old, 16.3H, grey, Warmblood gelding. “Competing in the Legacy Cup is a dream come true. I feel really enthusiastic about coming back next year.”
The purse for the Pro 3’6” division totaled $8,800, with $7,300 allocated to the Finals. The winning horse received $2,912.
PRO 3’ DIVISION
Cool, calm and collected was the way both Schatt and All the Answers handled the Pro 3’ Hunter Go Round and Finals. The 11-year-old, 16.1H, black, Holsteiner who got sidelined for a year with a quarter crack was back in action. “He was never able to reach his potential and so it was always very frustrating. He just tries so hard,” commented the 37-year-old.
For Mayer, Chestnut Ridge, NY, it was truly a cloud nine victory after she dominated the Restricted Pro 3’ Hunter Finals aboard Mutch De Lothain. “It was a totally unexpected win.” Mayer explained that the eight-year-old, 16H, bay, Belgian-bred gelding has had limited experience. “He's happy and comes out willing to please.”
For the Go Round Painter was an artist with Papillon Rouge, owned by Dr. & Mrs. Manrin, negotiating a course that tipped the scale. Like Schatt this was the first class at this horse show for the 8-year-old, 16.1H, chestnut, Brandenburg gelding who the 29-year-old says, “is incredibly brave. The more impressive it is to look at the better he is.”
Bielefeld, Wellington, FL, was still learning about Real Magic since the pair have only been together for a short time, but it is certainly a magical combination. “This horse is Quality with a capital Q,” explained the 44-year-old professional. About the six-year-old, brown, Dutch Warmblood, 16.2H gelding, who won the Pre Green Incentive division.
The purse for the Pro 3’ division was $12,800. Of that $11,300 went to the Finals and the winner received $3,672.
NON PRO 3’6” WINNERS
McArdle took the early lead in the Non Pro 3’6” Finals but waited cautiously to see if someone else would take it away. In the end she and her 10-year-old, 15.3H, chestnut, Belgian Warmblood gelding MVP proved to be the most valuable players. As the Leading Non Pro Junior Rider, based on money won and selected from the 3’6” division, McArdle was presented with the Signature Trophy.
Scheriff and her 12-year-old, 16.2H, bay, Holsteiner gelding Lavari bested the field of Non Pro 3’6” Amateurs to take the championship ribbon. Scheriff, 24, who lives in Ramsey, NJ, received the Leading Amateur Rider honors. She recently graduated from Quinnipiac with a degree in Criminal Justice. “My dream is to ride horses for the rest of my life.”
The top 25 riders qualified from a field of 40 to compete in the Finals by first riding in the Go Round. That Non Pro 3’6” Go Round and Junior class was won by On The Rox ridden by Ande Farish and owned by Lanes End. Winner of the Non Pro 3’6” Amateur Go Round was Cruise, ridden by Lindsay Fishell, owned by Royce Fishell and Lindsey Sey.
The purse for the Non Pro 3’6” division totaled $12,000, with $10,500 earmarked for the Finals. The winning horse received $3,520.
NON PRO 3’ WINNERS
Amateur rider Emily Wygod was competing on North Shore, an 8-year-old, 16.2H, bay gelding, in the Non Pro 3’ Finals to have some fun. “I wasn’t expecting much,” said the Californian. That fun ride led to North Shore winning the Go Round, the Finals and the Amateurs.
For Jennifer Waxman, 16, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, the Non Pro 3’ Junior Finals were her lucky charm. She rode Ulone, a horse she’s ridden only a couple of times. Waxman has been a consistent winner at the Legacy Cup and admits, “It is a good opportunity for the hunters to win some money for once. And it’s fun and different.”
The top 25 riders had to qualify from a field of 37 by first riding in the Go Round. Twelve-year-old Lauren Tyree, Chicago, IL, was soft spoken yet excited after winning the Non Pro 3’ Junior Go Round on her 6-year-old, 15.3H, bay, Selle Francais gelding, Mozart, owned by First Partners, who she’s only been riding for a year. Their ride was as musical as his name.
The purse for the Non Pro 3’ division totaled $11,400, with $9,900 earmarked for the Finals. The winning horse received $3,406.
PONY HUNTER WINNERS
Brittni Raflowitz dominated in the Pony Hunters aboard Mind Your Step, a 6-year-old, 13.2H, chestnut, Dutchbred gelding nicknamed “cookie because he looks like a cookie monster and gives me kisses,” she explained. Her medium pony really did mind his steps as he boldly negotiated both courses to catch the eye of the judges and the highest marks.
The teenager was impressed with the course. “I thought it was tough, especially the way the jumps were set up. They were on the rail and angled. It wasn’t your normal pony hunter course which is usually a single fence, outside line and down the diagonal. We never get anything interesting. I like the courses to be a little tougher. It makes you think!”
The Leading Pony Rider title was the result of Brittni accumulating $2,055, the most money won by a rider in the pony division. A total of 20 ponies competed. With the add-back of $200 from their entry fees, the entire purse for the division was $6,500. The portion allocated to the Finals was $5,000 with the first place pony receiving a check for $1,560.
ABOUT THE LEGACY CUP
The two-week Legacy Cup is the brainchild of the American Hunter-Jumper Foundation, Inc. (AHJF). It is unique in that it focuses on being different than the other typical Hunter events. Riders receive more money and prizes thanks to an add-back format and the support of sponsors. JanAgardy/Golden Point Farm, LLC sponsored the Non Pro 3’ & 3’6” Finals. Other sponsors include the Lindner Family for the Perpetual Trophy in their name, Susanne and Weatherly Stroh for the Signature Trophy & cooler as well as Lisa Cudahy for the Lisa AH Cudahy Perpetual Trophy.
The Pony Go Round/The Farnley Eiffel Tower trophy donor was Kimberly Kreider. The winner of the Pony Finals was presented with The Delta Dawn Perpetual Trophy and cooler sponsored by Stacey Lefton Glick and Kings Crossing LLC.
Boggs Hill/Tim & Kelly Goguen for $2,500 Added Money to the Pro 3’ Finals, Mr. & Mrs. John Ingram for the Restricted Pro 3’ Finals, and Janet Read for the $10,000 Pre Green Incentive. Our Day Farm/Lynn & Silas Jayne sponsored the Pro 3’ Go Round and Archibald Cox III & Brookway Stables the Restricted Pro 3’ Go Round. Bryan Baldwin/Meralex Farm sponsored the Pro 3’6” Finals. Ingram Charitable Fund, Inc. & The John Ingram Family sponsored the $3,000 3’6” Restricted Pro Finals. The $1,500 Pro 3’6” Go Round sponsor was Mr. & Mrs. Rush Weeden. McQuay Stables sponsored the $500 Restricted Pro Go Round.
Gifts to the horses and riders were thanks to Personalized Products, Essex Classics and Malvern Saddlery, EMO Insurance for the ribbons and Goshen Hill Foundation for a $100 cash prize to the grooms of the top three horses in each class. The Pro Finals jacket awarded to the winner is sponsored by Stacey Lefton Glick & Kings Crossing LLC.
