Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue Gives Horses a Second Chance, Finding Racehorse "Can't Stop the Beat," and 11 Other Horses, A Permanent, Happy Home

Following Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue's record-breaking rescue of 163 horses from a horse auction in Ohio in May, the horse community in Wellington, FL - from international polo players to Olympic show jumpers and dressage riders to trail riders - has rallied to form a unified effort to say we will not tolerate the abuse and torture of horses.

Among the horses 163 horses saved that day was a racehorse named Can't Stop the Beat, renamed Stargazer by Pure Thoughts. On May 6 this horse ran his last race. May 23 he was up for sale for meat. The Canadian-bred Chestnut Thoroughbred (whose bloodlines included greats such as Bold Ruler, Northern Dancer and Secretariat) was sold by breeders Anthony and Leslie Russo for more than $20K in 2005 as a yearling. Three years and 18 races later, he was sold again, this time by his trainer and owner, John Falkner. Falkner left him at an auction where the horse would be wanted not for his speed and spirit, but for the meat on his bones, for sale by the pound. This process of racehorses being slaughtered for profit was exposed recently on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel." Fortunately for this four-year old healthy horse, Pure Thoughts not only saved his life, but also paired him with a home for life.

Horse rescue comes in many shapes and on May 23 for Pure Thoughts, with help from the The Davis/ McCullough Foundation, it came in the shape of a large-scale operation. Together, that day, for one day, all the horses were saved from Sugarcreek Kill Auction. "Can't Stop the Beat" was safe.
But the real second chance came after this horse arrived in Wellington, FL. There, in June, he caught the eye of horse lover Michelle Caroli and she adopted him. An experienced horseperson, Michelle noticed a problem with these geldings' knees. X-rays showed three chips in his knees. They were not recent injuries, he had been racing like that. Palm Beach Equine Clinic offered help. Dr. Robert Brusie performed the surgery and now this once unwanted gelding has a bright future and was ready for his trip to her home.

You see, he was indeed going home, he was born in Canada and now he would live out the rest of his life in Canada, loved, healthy and most of all, forever safe. Stargazer did not take this trip alone, he was accompanied by 11 other horses and yearlings, that are now safe and home on the Caroli Farm. On June 4th, 2008, they all loaded the beautiful tractor-trailer for their final ride. Their ride to freedom.

Join us on this mission to save horses and help us have more days like this one in May where, for one day all the horses were safe. To contribute you may go to the website www.PTHR.org or you may send a donation to Pure Thoughts Inc. 19181 Capet Creek Ct., Loxahatchee, FL 33470. You may also contact Jennifer at 561-254-0415.

Pure Thoughts is an all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of horses, yearlings and foals that were bound for the foreign owned slaughterhouses in our country. These horses would have been brutally tortured and slaughtered so that they could be served as a delicacy in foreign countries. In addition we also rescue horses from starvation, abuse and neglect, any horse in need. We have saved over 1150 innocent equines and as long as these cruel acts continue we will continue to fight for the horses. We cannot do this alone...we need your help!! Please help us and others save these beautiful animals and please remember in your thoughts the ones we were unable to reach.
