Seventeen-year-old Katherine Newman had another successful show this past week at the KHJA Horse Show in Lexington, KY. The event was held at the Kentucky Horse Park from August 27-30, 2008. The young rider trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry, in Wellington, FL, at their hunter/jumper show stable Allwyn Court. Coming off numerous wins at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show in Lexington, Newman continued to ride her way to the winner's circle and earn top ribbons.

In the WIHS Equitation class, Newman showed La Coretto, owned by Comfortside Farm. After her outstanding rides in the hunter and jumper phases, she captured first place overall. She also competed in the USEF Show Jumping Talent Search with La Coretto and came away with fourth place.

She showed in the Large Junior 16-17 Hunters aboard Pacemaker, and the pair had a clean sweep, winning every class in the division and securing the championship ribbon. "He was great!" commented Newman. "He was so much fun to ride because he is made and knows what he is doing. In the handy, I could make tight turns and hand gallop easily." Pacemaker is owned by V. Mavec LLC. He and La Coretto are both new rides for Newman, and she only started riding them the previous week at the Bluegrass Festival.

She scored another championship in the Small Junior 16-17 Hunter division with Pirate, a horse she rode for Bogg's Hill. "Pirate jumped really well this week," she said. "He won three over fences classes, was third in the handy, and fourth in the hack, which added up for the championship." In the same division, she showed Robert Cole's horse Lifetime Guarantee, guiding him to win first place under saddle. They also received two seconds and two fourths over fences.

In the jumper ring, Newman piloted Chellapo Z in the High Junior Jumpers. They took home first place on Friday after having the only clear round in the class. Additionally, they pinned sixth on Thursday and were fifth in the High Junior Jumper Classic on Sunday. Chellapo Z is owned by Mimi Abel-Smith. "He was great this week," said Newman. "The courses were technical, but it was really fun to show him in the Highs. I also got to show in the Low Junior Jumpers on Gemini De Turlong. She went well on Thursday and was second." Gemini De Turlong is also owned by Robert Cole.

Katherine Newman will compete next at the ASPCA Maclay Regionals, held at Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY.
