Mini & Pony
In honor of their 120th Anniversary, the American Shetland Pony Club (ASPC) designed a special commemorative trophy for top winners at the 2008 American Shetland Pony Congress competition this year. The ASPC is a USEF recognized breed with a prestigious tradition. Founded in 1888, the ASPC has expanded to ensure the longevity of the small equine and now includes four registries; the Classic American Shetland Pony and Modern American Shetland Pony, the American Miniature Horse Registry, the American Show Pony Registry and the National Show Pony.
The 2008 American Shetland Pony Congress held in Cloverdale, Indiana earlier this month, is the most esteemed competition for the American Shetland Pony. Each year, the show attracts hundreds of small equines from all areas of the country to compete for the title of National Champion in a number of disciplines. This year, top winners took home the special commemorative trophy from All Things Equine that was modeled after a primitive iron statue of the famed American Shetland Pony stallion, Frisco Pete.
All Things Equine, based out of Zebulon, Georgia, created the commemorative trophy. All Things Equine owner, Bill Fairchild, had an integral part in creating the trophy along with artist Nancy Belden. When discussing the challenge of creating a new trophy based on a crude initial idea, Fairchild said, “It was difficult at times, but I really enjoy the creative part of new pieces.” Fairchild, a long time judge, trainer, and horseman was happy to create a distinct trophy saying, “I have a lot of vested interest in this business. I've seen it from the other side as a competitor and it is great to get a unique award as recognition.” Fairchild also had high words of praise for the creativity and dependability in Belden's work and mentioned, “She is the secret behind this award.”
Fairchild and Belden didn't have long to finalize the trophy. Although discussions about the design of a commemorative trophy began more than nine months in advance, a final design was chosen just months before the 2008 Shetland Pony Congress. Then it was agreed that it would be fitting to model the commemorative trophy after Frisco Pete, a six-time National Halter Champion stallion that has had a great influence on the breed since the 1950's when he was competing. Winners that earned this wonderful trophy will be able to enjoy the sculpture for years to come as a symbol of the longevity of the American Shetland Pony and the ASPC.
