Politicians Come to Wellington to See The Working Alternative to Horse Slaughter

It is not everyday you can get our country's politicians out to visit a cause that is important to the citizen's of this nation... but the horses did just that.

Capitol Hill does not have stalls filled with beautiful horses, it does not have the soft sounds of knickers as you walk by, it does not have the laughter of children playing with the horses, it does not have the look on the people's face as they fall in love with their new friend... but Wellington does. Victoria McCullough decided to put an open invitation to our politicians to come view the alternative to horse slaughter at work.

On October 7, 2008 some of our Representatives, soon to be Representatives and Congressman came to Wellington to view the alternative to slaughter. In attendance that day were Robert Wexler, Ron Klein, Joseph Abruzzo and Lynda Bird. We cannot expect our politicians to realize there is an alternative to slaughter until they see it and know it. Little by little Washington D.C. is seeing there is an answer to horse slaughter.

Too many arguments, like one made by Congressman Steve King of Iowa are false. His argument during the last judiciary committee meeting stating he was concerned that there would be an excess of horse carcasses, which would cause the buzzards to come and there be an over population of buzzards. That is an extremely unfounded border lining on inane argument since over 95% of the horses that are sent to slaughter are good, sound, quality horses that have no problem finding another home. As Congressman Robert Klein stated, " It does not have to be this or that, there is an answer to horse slaughter that lies in the middle" Attending with Ron Klein, was supporter and long time horse advocate Richard Schecter. Years ago Richard rescued his first mare and foal and has been a strong voice for the horses since then.

Barbi Moline and Beth Barrie, State Leaders for the Anti Slaughter Groups for the State of Florida have been working diligently at getting the attention of Congressman Alcee Hastings and his support of the horses. So Linda Bird, who is running for State Senate left with a package in hand to give to Alcee Hastings in hopes that he will also come see the successful alternative at work and see that his vote is needed. Senator Tim Mahoney used a horse in his campaign, which of course would grab the eye of Floridians who are Equestrian, so it has come as a shock to find out that he has not come forth in support of HR6598 and voted against HR249, the wild horse slaughter protection bill. The hypocrisy in this is obvious, you cannot use the horse to get your votes and then when it is time for actions allow the horse to be inhumanely killed and tortured. Maybe it is time he Tim Mahoney listens to his constituents and takes the time to see that horse slaughter is not necessary in this country.

Last week our country and our politicians were intently focused on the "bail out" solution. While that was going on Pure Thoughts Inc. Horse & Foal Rescue and The Triumph Project had a record adoption week. So it is hard to convince us the citizens of this country are not concerned about the horses. Currently H.R.6598 is being held up, yet again by the Agriculture Committee (Chairman Collin Peterson of Minnesota) and Congressman Bob Goodlatte, VA. As Victoria McCullough stated, "It is like fighting a boxing match and they shut off the lights. They know they cannot win so they fight unfairly. It is easy to win a fight is your opponent does not have a target to hit."

The Triumph Project - Victoria McCullough of the Davis-McCullough Foundation founded the Triumph Project as an awareness campaign to enlighten the world through unified efforts, both in the United States as well as abroad, of the betrayal of our equine ally. Throughout history, horses have served us by escorting us to battle, tilling our fields, drawing our carriages, and enriching our lives as our companions and friends.

Pure Thoughts Inc. - is an all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of horses, yearlings and foals that were intended to go to slaughter for human consumption. These horses would have been brutally tortured and slaughtered. Pure Thoughts Inc. Horse & Foal Rescue also rescues horses from starvation, abuse and neglect, any horse in need. To date, over 1150 innocent equines have been saved and we will continue to fight for the horses. We cannot do this alone...we need your help!! Please help us and others save these beautiful animals and please remember in your thoughts the ones we were unable to reach.
