Training Tips

Leslie Desmond will be starting the colt that she draws for this competition using the techniques of "feel and release" that she learned from Bill Dorrance. This will be her first public colt-starting competition using these techniques. She will be competing against two other contestants -- Doug Mills from Canada and Katja Taueg from Switzerland.
At this event, one hour a day for three days are allotted for the preparation and education of a colt for riding. Details of this competition are in the attached link, in German and English.
"I am planning to win, of course!" Leslie said, "but wether I do or not, the colt will be prepared for many things that are not possible to help him understand in this short a period of time using most conventional techniques. Such as: bridling, backing, and stopping when a rider begins to fall off. Knowing which direction you want to go without pulling on the lead rope, or tightening the rein. Going from a stop to a gallop in a stride without a whip, flag, noise, treats, or kicking or crowding the colt. Stopping the same way, through release, in one stride."

Best wishes for a very Happy and successful new Year!
