Reining
The 2009 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby moved into its second day of competition with the first go, second section of the $30,000 added Non Pro Derby. The Oklahoma City, Okla. show also welcomed 11 ancillary classes in the State Fairgrounds Coliseum and Adequan® Arena.
Wimpys Little Buddy (Wimpys Little Step x All Thats Dun) and Scottsdale, Arizona’s Kim Dooley marked an impressive 221 to take the lead in the Level 4 Non Pro Derby division. Wimpys Little Buddy and Andrea Fappani have been successful in the Oklahoma City venue previously making the finals in the 2008 NRHA Open Derby. Kim Dooley is a well-versed NRHA competitor with NRHA earnings in excess of $161,170 and was the 1999 AQHA Amateur Reining World Champion.
In a tie with yesterday’s high score and second place for Tuesday’s Non Pro second section, I Spin For Chics (Tangys Classic Peppy x Chics Koko Angel) and NRHA Million Dollar Rider Mandy McCutcheon marked a 219.5. Tim McQuay owns the six-year-old stallion who was the 2007 and 2008 NRHA Derby Non Pro Champion with McCutcheon aboard. Samantha Griffin of De Winton, Alberta, Canada and This Chic N Whiz (Smart Chic Olena x This Chex On Top) marked a 219.5 on Monday to remain among the top contenders after Tuesday’s section. Samantha Griffin rode This Chic N Whiz to be a 2008 NRHA Non Pro Derby finalist and rode A Bright Chic to the win in the 2004 Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity. Lance Griffin is the owner of both This Chic N Whiz and A Bright Chic.
Aubrey, Texas’ Jordan Donnelly piloted Chexable (Inwhizable x Megarita Chex) to the high score for the Level 3 Intermediate Non Pro division. The 218 was good enough to win the Youth Non Pro division, as well. In the Level 2 Limited Non Pro and Level 1 Non Pro divisions, Taka Ticket and Chad Hartmann scored a 215.5 to lead today’s section in both divisions. Hartmann, of Arvada, Colorado, owns the Gallo Del Cielo gelding. Skeets Little Annie (Skeets Peppy x Oaks Little Annie) and Frederick Christen paired up for the high score of the day in the Prime Time Non Pro division with a 218.5. Christen hails from Whitehouse, Ohio.
The Draw Party for the 2009 NRHA Derby Level 4 Non Pro, Level 3 Intermediate Non Pro, Level 2 Non Pro Limited, Level 1 Non Pro division is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24. The first section of Friday’s finals begin at 2 p.m. with the second section starting at 5 p.m.
