The 2010 Stock Horse of Texas Annual Convention was held in conjunction with the Ranching Heritage Weekend of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Kicking off the event was the SHOT-APHA Smackdown that featured 12 SHOT members and 12 Paint Horse Association members in a head-to-head competition. Riders who finished as the Top 3 in 2009 in the Open, Non Pro, Novice and Youth divisions competed on behalf of SHOT.
“We had a great crowd in the Justin Arena for the SHOT-APHA Smackdown,” said Kim Lindsey, SHOT Executive Director. “The Smackdown serves as a great way to generate interest in stock horse competitions. It really showcases our event, and the Paint Horse Association’s event that is very similar to SHOT competitions.”
As part of the weekend, SHOT also conducted a judging seminar, where spectators could score runs in each event, and listen to a panel of judges explained how they scored the runs. “Our judging seminar draws people interested in judging, but it also draws a large crowd that’s interested in how our program works,” explained Lindsey. “After they’ve attending a judging seminar, they understand how to interpret the scores their own runs receive at a show.”
Wrapping up the convention, SHOT honored the top riders in each division at their Year End Banquet. In the Open All Around, Jimbo Humphreys finished first and second overall on BJ Whiskey and Josephs Catchup All, respectively. In the Non Pro All Around race, Laurie Shelton and Ima Little Tequilla took top honors, followed by Clarence Young and Peppys Bosque Belle.
Limited Non Pro rider Darlene Hicks and Smoky Starlight won the All Around, followed closely by Susan Bozeman and Boogie Woogie Melody. Green Horse All Around went to Doug Householder and Minnie Mate, with Nonie Casselman-Reed and Ms T Spoonful Uv Pep finishing in reserve.
The Youth All Around saddle was awarded to Bobby Weaver and Royal Smoken Bob, with Dejonna Casselman-Reed and Versatile Lena winning reserve. Top spot in the Novice All Around was awarded to Ross Dalby with Lady Whizard. Beverly Jacobs and Badgers Honeybear received reserve all around honors.
