When it comes to competition, perhaps the biggest for Randy Paul comes from his brothers. Growing up in a family of reining and working cow horse trainers, the Paul brothers are no stranger to the winners’ circle, and at the 2009 AQHA World Show, it was Randy Paul and Smokeelan who emerged the winners over brother Jimmy and Tenlight for the Senior Working Cow Horse World title.
Randy and Smokeelan, owned by Jill Smekel-George, scored a 221.5 in the reining and a 224.5 in the fence
work for a 446 composite, which won the class and a check for $10,853. Randy followed Jimmy in the 15-horse
fnals, but didn’t know how his brother had fared until after he was through with his own run.
“I didn’t know what he’d marked because they hadn’t announced it, but I really don’t worry about anybody,”
Randy explained. “I just go in there and do my job and let the judges worry about it.”
It was the third AQHA World Championship for Randy, but his frst working cow horse title. He won the Senior
Reining title in 2007 on Sorcerers Apprentice, and took the Junior Reining World title in 2008 on Starbucks Fin-
est. The win in 2008 made Randy an NRHA Million Dollar Rider.
Smokeelan, a 7-year-old stallion, has been a steady mount for Paul, as the pair has won nearly $100,000 in the
reining pen. As for coming to Oklahoma City and bringing home the top prize for the third year in a row, Randy,
as well as Jimmy, were quick to thank their father, Jim Paul Sr., who is an NRCHA Hall of Famer.
“He’s a good mentor,” Randy noted. “There’s probably nobody better in my book.”
Randy Paul is based out of Rancho Oso Rio in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is an NRHA Million Dollar Rider and
