Do you—or someone you know—resemble legendary 1860s frontiersman and Pony Express Rider Buffalo Bill Cody? If so, the Pony Express National Museum in St. Joseph, Mo., invites you to compete for $500 in gold coins on Thursday, April 1. The contest will be one of the highlights of the Pony Express Sesquicentennial Celebration, April 1-3.
“We are looking for the older Buffalo Bill character of 1900 to1917, complete with flowing white hair and his famous white goatee, who toured with his Wild West Show in later years,” said Sesquicentennial Co-chairman Jim Conlon. “Buffalo Bill also was a trapper, bullwhacker, Civil War soldier and a famous horseman, as well as one of the first Pony Express riders.”
Contestants will be judged on likeness, character, poise and acting ability. They must compete in authentic attire, and bear an overall resemblance to Buffalo Bill in his later years.
The contest winner will receive $500 in gold coins; the second place winner will receive $100. An audience favorite also will be chosen.
The winning “Buffalo Bill” will be featured in the Daughters of the American Revolution re-enactment, 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 2 in Patee Park next to the Pony Express National Museum. He’ll also “star” in the Pony Express 150th Anniversary Parade, 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 3, also featuring the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales.
Registration will start at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 1, in Patee Park, across from the Pony Express National Museum at 914 Penn Street. Registration forms are available at www.PonyExpress.org. There is no entry fee for the contest. Judging will begin at 5:15 p.m. and the winner will be announced at 8:00 p.m. following the Chuck Wagon dinner.
The Buffalo Bill Lookalike Contest is one of the many exciting events planned for the Pony Express Sesquicentennial, April 1-3 in St. Joseph, Mo. Other events will include a gala banquet, James Gang train robbery re-enactments, book signings, 1860s living history displays, horseback riding skill displays, the Johnny Fry Ride from the original Pony Express stables at the Pony Express National Museum and a concert by America’s #1 Cowboy Music singer Michael Martin Murphey.
