April 1st– Fitness Focused 8:00am– 10:00am
(Meet at the Go John Trailhead)
Join us for every Thursday in April as we get out on the trail to get our feet moving and heart pumping. We will bring you throughout a different part of the park each week and total 2.5 to 3.5 miles each week. It is getting warm out there so bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.


April 2nd – Backyard Bird Watching 8:00am –9:30am
(Meet at the Clay Mine Trailhead / Campsite # 8)
Have you always wondered what bird is making that pretty sound in the morning or which one is building all those nests around your home? Join us and discover these birds and more as we have them come and visit us. We will visit an area of the park set up to view these amazing little fliers of the desert. Some binoculars and bird books will be on hand for use.

April 2nd – Blooms of the Desert 1:00pm-2:30 pm
(Meet at the Go John Trailhead)
Join the Ranger as we get a close up look of the various plants blooming throughout this amazing land. This will be an easy 1.5 mile hike. Bring the camera, plenty of water and sturdy closed toed shoes.







April 3rd - I Have Been Bit!! 10:00am– 11:30am
(Meet at the Nature Center)
Time to get all your questions answered on what to do if you happen to run into one of our desert’s venomous creatures. We will have some of them on hand including rattlesnakes and scorpions and we will cover the dos and don’ts of first aid and living with these amazing animals.


“The History of the Cowboy” 6:00pm– 8:00pm
(Meet at the Nature Center Amphitheater)
We will take you through the history of the cowboy on this unforgettable journey.
You will meet C. L. “Lee” Anderson, an 1880 Arizona Cowboy and his horse Concho as he brings you through the history of the old west as never seen before. He will take you back to relive Arizona’s Territorial Days and tell you how it really was in the days of gunslingers and saloons. Bring everything you ever wanted to know about the days of the cowboy and find out if Hollywood was fact or fiction…
Bring comfortable blankets to sit on in our outdoor amphitheater.**Join us for a campfire after this program right at the amphitheater! Bring your smores supplies and roasting sticks if you would like!


April 7th – Medicinal Plants of the Desert 9:00am– 11:00am
(Meet at the Slate Trailhead)
Join us as we learn about the uses of desert plants through the eyes of an Herbalist. Local Herbalist Melanie Dunlap will join us on a short 1 mile hike and give you insight on how these amazing plants can help with allergies, insect stings and more! Bring plenty of water and your notepad for this amazing journey.

April 9th– “Frontier Tour “ 9:00am– 11:00am
(Meet at the Slate Trailhead)
We are going to flashback to the past and visit the days of the Old West. We will be
visiting Cave Creek’s history and make you feel like you are riding the stagecoach. This easy 2 mile hike will bring you down our historic Slate Trail and visit an old mining site. Bring EXTRA water and some sturdy shoes.


April 9th– “Bug Bonanza” 7:00pm-8:30pm
(Meet at the Nature Center)
Join us on a bug adventure in the desert. We will be doing a presentation on those creepy crawlers at our outdoor amphitheater and then look for them around the trails at our Nature Center. We will set up some stationary blacklights also to see who wants to come and visit us! Wear closed toed shoes and go easy on the bug spray!


April 10th – Rattlesnake Review 10:00am– 11:30am
(Meet at the Nature Center)
Our rattling desert residents are on the move with the warm weather here. Join us indoors at our Nature Center where you will be able to get a close up look at a rattlesnake and learn all the myths and facts about these amazing reptiles.


April 10th – Blooming Cactus! 1:00pm –2:30pm
(Meet at the Slate Trailhead)
We are going to take a walk and learn all about the cactus blooms of the desert. From Saguaros to Barrel Cactus, all these spiny plants start to show their softer side. This will be an easy 1 mile walk on our Slate Trail. Always bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes.

April 16th– Bats are Where It’s At! 6:00 pm– 8:00 pm
(Meet at the Nature Center)
Come to this exciting program and learn about the amazing world of Bats! We will be joined by Arizona Game and Fish Bat Management Coordinator, Angie McIntire. She will give us an overview of all of the Arizona bat species and their important role in our ecosystem. Are bats blind? Do they all have rabies? Get the answers to these commonly asked questions and many more. After the indoor presentation we will go outside and use a special device to actually listen to these amazing little creatures using their echolocation. Bring a blanket to sit on in the outdoor amphitheater.

Are you new to the desert? Are you wondering what is out there in this amazing land?
We will be taking a short 1 mile hike on our Jasper trail and talk about all the amazing plants and animals that live in the desert. Once we are done you will never see the desert the same again!

April 23rd– Into the Clay Mine Moonlit Hike 7:00pm-9:00pm
(Meet at the Group Campground)
Join us on an amazing and mysterious adventure as we enter our Clay Mine. This will be an easy 1 mile hike as we have the sun light the way to the mine and then the moon will take over as the darkness takes over the land. Once inside, candles will bring us through the history of this mine and will learn how its contents were used to cure all your ailments. Always bring water and wear sturdy shoes. Bring a flashlight in case you need it.


April 24th - I Have Been Bit!! 10:00am– 11:30am
(Meet at the Nature Center)

Bring your dog with you today and learn how your four legged friend can enjoy themselves but still be safe out on the trails. We will be joined by The Sonoran Foothills Pet Clinic who will give you some expert advice on things such as hydration, poisonous creatures and other topics concerning pet safety. Bring water for both of you and your leash for this moderate 3.5 mile informative hike.


April 29th– Fitness Focused 8:00am– 10:00am
