Paint & Color Breeds
The city of Fort Worth was the backdrop for equestrian competition on an international scale during the 2010 Summer World Championship Paint Horse Show, held June 23 – July 3 at Will Rogers Memorial Center. An annual event, the Summer World Show is home to all Youth world-level competition and all Open and Amateur world-level cattle and reining classes for the Fort Worth-based Association.
The show drew 2,035 entries with 579 horses over the course of 11 days and awarded $300,000 in cash and prizes. In addition to the 118 horse show classes, the Association also hosted the biennial Youth World Games; the Youth Team Tournament; a youth horse judging contest sponsored by Hart Trailers; Paint For A Day, an open all-breed youth horse show; jackpotted open all-breed classes; a Chris Cox clinic and a gift show.
Additionally, the schedule included fun, family-friendly activities for all ages: a stick horse contest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a youth exhibitor social sponsored by the Fortenberry Family & Gillespie Show Horses, a youth welcome party sponsored by Double C Acres, the AjPHA National Convention & Ice Cream Social, an AjPHA dance, a coloring contest, the new Youth Versatility Challenge, dog races, Metro Golf Car decorating contest, and a boot scramble.

Youth judging contest
The annual youth horse judging contest was held on June 26. Eighteen junior teams and 35 senior teams judged 8 classes of American Paint Horses, and then presented oral reasons later in the day. Hart Trailers sponsored the event, and provided $500 scholarships to the overall high-point individuals in each age group. The junior division scholarship was presented to Katie Ritchey from the Tulsa County 4-H Horse Club, while the senior division scholarship was presented to her sister Kelsey Ritchey, also from the Tulsa County 4-H Horse Club.
AjPHA leaders elected for 2010-2011 term
The American Junior Paint Horse Association (AjPHA) directors elected their 2010-2011 Executive Committee and Zone Representatives during the course of the show, following the AjPHA National Convention. AjPHA National Directors represent their state, province, or country. They are responsible for directing association business, including voting on by-law changes and electing the AjPHA Executive Committee. National Directors meet annually at the AjPHA National Convention, and are asked for input on association activities throughout the year. Visit ajpha.com/news for a complete list of 2010-2011 representatives.
Outstanding AjPHA members recognized
One main purpose of the AjPHA program is to build and shape Youth leaders. The Youth Member of the Year, Youth Club of the Year and From the Heart awards recognize those who excel in that capacity, and are presented during the Summer World Show Youth activities.
Lauren Kelly of Brighton, Illinois, was named Youth Member of the Year, and received $1,000 and a custom Gist buckle.
The Club of the Year recognizes outstanding AjPHA regional clubs, which serve to provide an educational and social organization for youth members who share a common interest in the American Paint Horse. AjPHA recognizes the top three clubs with monetary rewards. The Missouri Junior Paint Horse Club was named Club of the Year and received $1,000 sponsored by Carson Underwood; the Gulf Coast Junior Paint Horse Club received $200 for 2nd place; and the Arizona Junior Paint Horse Club received $150 for 3rd place.
APHA corporate partner Markel Insurance sponsors the From the Heart Award, which is presented to the Youth club that demonstrates the most involvement and dedication to the AjPHA's Presidential Service Project. A $500 check from Markel Insurance was presented to the Gulf Coast Junior Paint Horse Club for their support of the 2009-2010 project “Painted Warriors.”
Youth Team Tournament
A fun AjPHA tradition continued at the 2010 Summer World Show as teams of Youth representing their local regional clubs went head-to-head in four team-oriented events: hippology, knowledge relay, performance classes and a parade of teams. After all four events, the highest scoring of the nine teams entered was Texas, followed by Carolina and then Illinois.
Youth World Games
AjPHA takes the opportunity to highlight the association’s international members every other year at the Summer World Show with the Youth World Games (YWG). The team competition brought Youth from six countries and the United States together to show in four classes: Western horsemanship, showmanship, hunt seat equitation and trail. All of the horses used for the competition were available through the generosity of their owners, and were all shown in World Show classes throughout the week by their youth owners before being shown in YWG classes.
The Dutch Diamonds claimed the overall victory, with Team USA finishing second and Team Germany third overall. Young equestrians from Canada, Australia, Sweden and Austria also made strong showings and represented their countries very well.
Paint For A Day youth all-breed open show grows
For the second time, APHA hosted “Paint For A Day” in conjunction with the Summer World Show, inviting young horsepeople in the area to bring any type of horse (or mule) to show in Will Rogers Coliseum during the large Paint show to expose them to AjPHA, APHA and Paint Horses.
Exhibitors are encouraged to paint their horses’ coats and express their creativity – hence the name “Paint For A Day.” An AjPHA membership is included with the all-day show fee for each exhibitor so that they can continue their involvement with the youth organization.
Entries were up 30% for the unique show, which drew Paint Horses, mustangs, mules, Thoroughbreds and mixed breeds. A range of classes was offered from showmanship to speed events in Walk-Trot 5-9, 13 & Under and 14-18.
More about the Summer World Championship Paint Horse Show
For the first seven days of the 11-day Summer World Show, young Paint Horse enthusiasts and their families met in Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in a full array of disciplines both on the ground and aboard their American Paint Horses for World Champion titles, great prizes, and fun.
Upon the conclusion of Youth classes, focus shifted to Open and Amateur cattle and reining classes through the close of the show. Twenty-eight Open, Amateur and Novice Amateur World Champions were named, while 12 Challenge and Sweepstakes classes paid out $63,900 in added money and jackpotted entry fees.
Calicos Top Gun Star, a 6-year-old bay tobiano mare owned by Woody & Madeline Hickman of Dallas, Texas, earned the Oscar Crigler Cattle Award for being the highest point-earning horse in Open cattle classes. The horse was shown by Bobby Lewis of Overbrook, Oklahoma.
APHA hosted a free, two-hour Chris Cox Horsemanship clinic on July 3 in John Justin Arena for a full audience, followed by a patriotic performance by the Lone Star Cowgirls and the popular freestyle reining class. The American Paint Horse Foundation hosted several therapeutic riding classes before presenting a custom-built Randy Bird saddle to APHA member Katie Holland of Belgrade, Montana, who will be able to return to the show ring after suffering a traumatic leg injury thanks to the Foundation’s work.
