“Food for Thought”
by Rocco Wachman
By the time you read this we will have Inaugurated our 45th President of this here United States of America and what a trip that was. My gosh does time go by fast, I can remember John Kennedy on the White House Lawn with Little John riding his Pony Like it was yesterday. Even though the Kennedy`s had an Equine Unit at the White House, Teddy Roosevelt was the last President that stabled horses for the purpose of Riding at the famous residence in Washington DC. Times do change and at times it is hard for me to keep up with it all.
WestWorld, in Scottsdale has made a lot of scheduling changes for 2017 and they have had an effect on some events that do interest many of us. The Parada Del Sol Rodeo has again made a move on it`s dates. The Rodeo this year, the 64th oThe Parada del Sol Rodeo will take place on the following schedule:Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 7 p.m. (Scottsdale Pro Bull Riding), Friday, March 10, 2017 at 7 p.m. (Rodeo), Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 7 p.m. (Rodeo),
Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 2 p.m. (Rodeo)
Check out www.paradadelsol.net for more info. A Rodeo Party will be at Handlebar J's on Saturday Night as well, so don't miss the live music and dancing starting 9pm.
This Rodeo has been a favorite of mine for many years and the Alford Family has done a fantastic job of keeping the traditions moving forward during challenging times. My hat off to their efforts. Rodeo Announcer Dan Fowlie will be at the helm again with the Salt River Rodeo Company providing the most important part of the event, the Livestock. People wrongly refer to the Bullfighters as “Clowns,” I can assure you these men will risk their lives to protect anyone who is in that arena and do not Clown Around. Good friends Luke Kraut and Clifford Maxwell will put themselves between Cowboys and 2000 pounds of Mad Bulls whenever they feel they need to. We call them Cowboy Lifesavers! PRCA Rodeo Legend Donny Landis will be the man in the barrel every performance and I have followed his work for many, many years……
The Rodeo is just one weekend but it comes at the end of a month long Festival that starts with the Parada Del Sol Parade and Trails End Party Saturday, February 11th at 10.00am. All of this is put together to raise money for Charity. The Parada Del Sol Rodeo is a Charitable, Non-Profit Organization and puts money in the right hands. Their web site lists: The 100 Club, Chicks and Chaps, Mohave Middle School, The Mary Kay Foundation, Every Kid Counts Children`s Charity, Happily Ever After, Hope Kids, Horizon High School, Veteran Ticket Foundation and the Woman`s Professional Rodeo Association as Charities they support.
Putting Events like this together is a huge endeavor and as soon as the 2017 Rodeo is over people go right to work on the 2018 project. I ask everyone who reads this to go to at least one Performance of the Rodeo and bring some friends. This is a piece of incredible Scottsdale History and reflects on an era almost gone and it deserves our support. As I am writing this as the TV News is running a story on the end of the Barnum and Bailey`s Circus. The owners state a change of entertainment interests and in turn the lack of attendance as the cause of the demise. I agree with that but pressure from animal activists surely have played a role I am guessing. My fear is that with Circus`s gone, Sea World not presenting the Orca`s in their show and other changes in the perception of animal exhibitions……. Rodeo will be next in the Crosshairs. Hope that day never happens and I am sure that the Sport I love will not go down nor by the wayside on our watch.
I will be at every performance of the 2017 Parada Del Sol Rodeo and I hope to see you all there.
