UC Davis testing offers APHA new testing options
The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) started using UC Davis exclusively for genetic testing as of January 1, 2012. Working with the California-based lab, APHA will offer a variety of testing options to APHA members. The new testing packages are designed to increase member awareness of the genetic possibilities when breeding their American Paint Horses. Included in the testing options are a comprehensive coat color package, comprehensive disease diagnostic package and selected individual tests.
The standard DNA genetic typing test is required for all breeding stallions (Paint, Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred), mares bred using transported cooled/frozen semen, dams of horses intended to race or donor mares in the embryo transfer, vitrified embryo or oocyte program. Parentage verification is required on resulting foals from the above breeding methods, all cropout horses, and all race horses foaled on or after January 1, 2000.

Open/Amateur World Championship Paint Horse Show marked with buckles, bronzes and barns full of top horses
More than $500,000 awarded in cash and prizes among 1,029 horses during 11-day show
Owners and exhibitors from 43 states, Canada, Australia, France and Mexico shared a common goal recently at the 2011 World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas, hosted by the American Paint Horse Association—to be named “champion.”
The show offered classes in a full range of disciplines, from halter to hunter under saddle, and showmanship to reining. This was the second phase of World Championship competition for the Association, featuring 235 classes. While the 178 World title classes are the backbone of the action, APHA also offers slot, Breeders’ Futurity, challenge and sweepstakes classes that offer cash payouts instead of a championship title. The total number of entries was 2,294.
Preliminary payout numbers indicate over $339,000 in cash was paid out to top exhibitors at the APHA World Show, including $116,761 in the Breeders’ Futurity; $110,250 in the slots; $78,300 in Challenge classes; and $19,020 in Sweepstakes payouts.

The Pinto Breed: History and Origin of the Breed
For its contribution to our predecessors dating back as far as history is recorded, the horse has been immortalized in story and song. A key part of civilization, it is also well represented in art. Studies of this art history reveal the early existence of what we recognize today as the Pinto Horse: a horse whose dual-colored coat pattern is comprised of white areas combined with another of the basic coat colors common to horses, making each Pinto unique. The Pinto is a color breed with documentation of pedigree as well as certain restrictions and exclusions that may apply depending on the sex, classification and background of each animal.
Though commonly associated with the Native American for its legendary magical qualities in battle, the Pinto horse was actually introduced to North America by European explorers, chiefly those from Spain, bringing their Barb stock that had been crossed with native European stock years before. It is believed that the Pinto patterns may have arrived in Europe via the Arabian strains, as Pinto markings appear in ancient art throughout the Middle East. However, evidence of the more dominant Tobiano pattern among the wild horses of the Russian Steppes suggests the introduction of Pinto coloring to Europe possibly as early as during the Roman Empire.
After the arrival of these European horses, great wild herds infused with the flashy color patterns we know today began to develop across America, eventually to be domesticated by the Native American. The white man continued to import many of the well-established and stylish European breeds as his foundation stock. Over time, however, with the civilization of the Native American and the white man's migration to the frontier, it often became necessary to cross these fancy, but less suitable breeds of the Eastern seaboard with the wild mustang stock to increase size and attractiveness as well as availability of a horse better suited to the strenuous working conditions of the day. This Western-bred horse became a fixture of America, especially the uniquely marked Pinto whose colorful presence in parades and films always added a little extra glamour.

Mr Bay Jewel, a 6-year-old solid Paint-bred gelding, helped a trainer and celebrity team win the 2011 Reining with the Stars competition on April 17. Sired by Marthas Mega Jac (AQHA) and out of Bootspainted Jewel, the gelding, also known as "Barney," was bred by top reining competitor Scott McCutcheon of Whitesboro, Texas, and is owned by G.C. Powell of Smithville, Mo. He has an impressive reining record, including winning a Reserve World Championship in Solid Paint-Bred Reining at the 2009 APHA World Show.
In the competition, held in Madison, Wis., trainer Cal Middleton coached Barney's rider Ernie Rodina, a Purina Mills sales manager and Better Horses Radio host, to the win. Middleton selected the Paint Horse because of their past successes as a team in National Reining Horse Association events. Rodina was able to ride the horse only a couple of times before entering the ring for the competition. For the event, he had to perform a reining pattern aboard Barney, and then Middleton had to ride the same horse in a trainer freestyle pattern.
“He definitely had less time on his horse than any other celebrity in the event,” Middleton commented about his celebrity rider Ernie Rodina. “Our horse was good. Ernie and I both brought our A-games.”

Texas horsemen gathered at the state Capitol on March 31, 2011, in support of bills that will generate revenue for the state and provide support for the struggling Texas horse industry. The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) is one of the founding members of Texas H.O.R.S.E. (Horse Organization for Racing, Showing and Eventing), the organization who put this event in motion. Over 1,000 horsemen attended the rally to show support for the bills and encourage legislators to put them to a public vote in Texas.
The bills, SB 1118 and HB 2111, outline a comprehensive plan to generate revenue through slot machine profits in a manner that will not allow rampant gambling in the conservative state, but provide opportunities for existing gambling locations to expand their options.
