APPALOOSA IS A CUT ABOVE IN 350-YARD CLAIMING RACE
Cowboy Cut Dominates Competition at Will Rogers Downs
Appaloosa gelding Cowboy Cut proved to have the fastest legs on the track in a 350-yard claiming race at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., on Apr. 6. Cowboy Cut and eight other Appaloosas and Paint horses competed for a purse of $6,000.
Cowboy Cut (First Wrangler, AQHA, x Miss Eye Appeal) took first place after completing the distance in 18.160 seconds. Five-year-old Cowboy Cut won $3,456, bringing his lifetime racing earnings to $32,833. The Missouri-bred Appaloosa is owned by Garett Rose of Kiowa, Okla., trained by Angie Jones, and was bred by Brenda and Gregory Short.

AYA OFFERS FUN AND EXCITING EQUINE ACTIVITIES FOR LOCAL YOUTH
Local Youths are invited to participate in Youth Activities, June 22-July 4
Summer break is just around the corner and that means the 2009 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show, June 22-July 4, will be coming to the Mississippi State Fairgrounds in Jackson! While the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is in town, the Appaloosa Youth Association (AYA) will host a plethora of fun activities for everyone to enjoy.
The Youth/Collegiate Horse Judging Contest is a great opportunity for any individual or team interested in brushing up on their equine judging skills. Members of 4-H, FFA, a regional or national AYA club or any other accredited breed association are eligible and encouraged to compete in the youth division. The two divisions, youth and collegiate, are open to teams and individuals. Entry fees are $25 for individuals and $75 for teams.

Donations Accepted for Appaloosa Performance Night to Benefit Children of Mississippi
Join the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) for one night at the 62nd National Championship Appaloosa Show to benefit the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children! Watch exhibitors and their Appaloosas compete for National Championship titles Friday, June 26, and bring a donation of any amount and/or new, unwrapped toys to benefit the hospital.
The Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children, based at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., is the only area hospital dedicated to the care and treatment of sick and injured youth. The ApHC is looking forward to raising funds to contribute to the care and recovery of more than 150,000 children afflicted with a wide spectrum of injuries and illnesses. Appaloosa Owners May Consign Horses Until Aug. 1 Deadline
It’s barely spring and the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is already preparing for the 2009 World Appaloosa Sale! This exciting, world-class sale will be held Oct. 28, 2009, at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The ApHC would like to invite owners of quality ApHC-registered Appaloosas to consign their horses by Aug. 1 to the 2009 World Appaloosa Sale, which encompasses the following three sale categories:
The Yearling Incentive Sale will feature the finest Appaloosa yearlings from throughout the country. Yearlings consigned to this sale will be eligible for $30,000 in guaranteed payouts in three incentive futurity classes at the 2010 World Championship Appaloosa Show. To win big money, owners may consign their Appaloosa to the Yearling Incentive Sale for $500 per horse.

APPALOOSAS RACE FOR MORE THAN $70,000 IN MARCH
Appaloosas raced for their piece of a $70,000-plus purse-money pie in March, and earned a sizeable slice of it! The following Appaloosas heated up the tracks:
Royal Blue Cash, proudly owned by Melannie Patton of Kiowa, Okla., earned the first win of the month in a 300-yard maiden race at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. The 4-year-old gray filly completed the track in 16.145 seconds to win $5,770 of the $10,200 purse offered, bringing her lifetime earns to $8,249. The Oklahoma-bred Appaloosa (Royal Streakin, AQHA, x Cash Blues) is trained by Angie Jones of Stuart, Okla., and was bred by Kay and Kin Pirtle of Norman, Okla.

ApHC EXHIBITORS EARN RIDER OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is proud to announce the recipients of the Rider of the Year awards. The ApHC would like to congratulate Alicia Rapp of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kelly Lynn Sweeney of Broad Brook, Conn. on their accomplishments in 2008.
Alicia was named the English Rider of the Year, while Kelly earned the Western Rider of the Year award.
Achieving this accomplishment is no easy feat—the Rider of the Year award is given to the one non-pro in each division who accumulates the most points in the specific group of classes, Western or English, as follows: Points must be earned in at least four different classes; a minimum of 10 points must be earned in Equitation classes; total points must have been earned in at least three different shows under three different judges; and points are to be counted from all classes in the group whether or not each individual class’s points have been earned in three shows.

A CELEBRI TE NAMED YOUTH SUPREME CHAMPION APPALOOSA
The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is proud to announce that Appaloosa A Celebri Te has earned the title Youth Supreme Champion Horse!
A Celebri Te earned this honor by accumulating at least 100 points through the ApHC National Point System, with at least 30 points in youth halter classes and at least 70 points in youth performance classes, under a minimum of five judges. The 11-year-old gelding was also required to have earned at least one Register of Merit in each of the three performance categories.

APPALOOSA FILLY HAS “HOT” WINNING STREAK IN 2008 AND BEYOND
Not many 2-year-old horses can boast having earned more than $50,000 in one year, but the Appaloosa filly One Hot Version earned her keep in 2008!
One Hot Version, also known as “Fergie,” kicked off her winning streak last June at the 61st National Appaloosa Show in Jackson, Miss., where the chestnut mare earned a National Champion title in the Open 2-year-old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure under the guidance of Terry Thompson.

APPALOOSA YOUTH FOUNDATION OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS
Times are tough and paying for college isn’t easy, but the Appaloosa Youth Foundation (AYF), a subsidiary of the Appaloosa Youth Association (AYA), is making it easier by offering up to $10,000 in scholarships! The AYF is proud to provide outstanding youth members of the AYA or the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) the opportunity to offset college expenses.
The AYF offers scholarships in three categories: Territory Scholarship, Continuing Education Scholarship and the Sagebrush Circuit Lew & Jo Eklund Scholarship.
The Territory Scholarship offers six awards of up to $1,000 that may be given to one graduating high school student that is entering an institution of higher education in the fall in each of the six ApHC territories. An additional scholarship of up to $1,000 may be awarded at random in this category. Applicants must submit a copy of official ACT, SAT or similar exam results, and they must have at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or 3.8 GPA on a 6.0 scale.

OKLAHOMA APPALOOSA YOUTH CLUB NAMED 2008 CLUB OF THE YEAR
The Appaloosa Youth Association (AYA) and the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) would like to congratulate the Oklahoma Appaloosa Youth Club for winning the 2008 Regional Youth Club of the Year contest!
Members of the association compiled a wonderful scrapbook of last year’s activities, and displayed the importance of charity events, unity, and most importantly, fun in their scrapbook.
When asked what activities they do to promote the Appaloosa breed they responded by simply stating, “Appaloosas promote themselves…every event [we] attend, [we] are promoting the breed.”

AYA HOSTS HORSE JUDGING CONTEST AT NATIONAL APPALOOSA SHOW
Interested in brushing up your equine judging skills? Then gather your friends and head to Jackson, Miss., as the Appaloosa Youth Association (AYA), the official youth program of the Appaloosa Horse Club, will once again host the Youth/Collegiate Horse Judging Contest at the 2009 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show. The Horse Judging Contest will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, June 26, at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds in Jackson.
The two divisions, youth and collegiate, are open to teams and individuals. Entry fees are $25 for individuals and $75 for teams.
Members of 4-H, FFA, a regional or national AYA or any other accredited breed association are eligible and encouraged to compete in the youth division. Round up a group of three to five friends, ages 18 and under, and compete as a team or participate as an individual.

APPALOOSA HORSE CLUB OFFERS AGED HORSE SPECIAL
In this time of financial difficulty, the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) understands the increasingly large demand for lower registration rates for aged Appaloosas. The ApHC is working to meet the needs of our members by offering the opportunity to register eligible Appaloosas over two years of age for the reduced rate of only $150! The Aged Horse Special will run from Apr. 1, 2009 through Mar. 31, 2010.
Eligibility Requirements:
• ApHC members only (non-members can purchase a membership with their horse’s registration)
• Applicant horse may be eligible for Regular (#) or Non-characteristic (N) classification
• Applicant horse must be two years old or older to benefit from the special
• Applicant horse must meet all registration requirements
• Applicant horse must meet ApHC bloodline requirement: At least one parent must be ApHC-registered with Regular (#) classification; non-Appaloosa parents must be registered with an approved breed association (AQHA, JC or AHA)

ApHC NAMES MEDALLION EARNING APPALOOSAS IN TRAIL AND DISTANCE
The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) Trail and Distance Department is pleased to announce the 2008 recipients of the 350-mile bronze medallions. Distance medallions are awarded annually to the Appaloosas completing 350 miles in open competitive and endurance rides. Double miles are awarded to Appaloosa that is named “Best Condition,” which is awarded to the horse deemed most physically fit to continue by the veterinarian in an endurance ride. Double miles will also be given to the Appaloosa that receives the most points in a competitive trail ride.

ApHC NAMES TRAIL AND DISTANCE REGISTERS OF MERIT APPALOOSA RECIPIENTS
The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) Trail and Distance Department is happy to announce the Appaloosa recipients of the 250- and 400-mile Registers of Merit (ROM) for 2008. The 250-mile ROM distinctions are awarded to ApHC-registered Appaloosas, five years or older, enrolled in the Distance Program that complete 250 miles in ApHC-approved endurance and/or competitive trail events. The 400-mile ROMs are awarded to Appaloosas that complete at least 400 miles in any of the four annual ApHC-sponsored trail rides.

ApHC ANNOUNCES 2008 CHIEF JOSEPH TRAIL RIDE MEDALLION WINNERS
The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is proud to announce Special Consensus, Stormy Be Gone, Be Appy Jack and Walks Far Eagle as the 2008 Chief Joseph Trail Ride Medallion winners.
The Chief Joseph Trail Ride medallion is earned by an ApHC-registered horse that completes 10 consecutive years of the annual ride. This historic ride retraces as closely as possible the 1,400-mile trek the Nez Perce and their Appaloosas took during their flight from the U.S. Cavalry in 1877. The ride winds through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana in 13 yearly segments, each consisting of approximately 100 miles. Each horse traveled more than 1,000 miles to earn this prestigious award.

ApHC NAMES “HORSE OF THE YEAR” RECIPIENTS FOR TRAIL AND DISTANCE
The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) Trail and Distance Department is proud to announce the 2008 recipients of the “Horse of the Year” awards. Congratulations to Fourmile’s Kuna and RR Roman Scooter.
To earn the prestigious “Horse of the Year” awards for Trail and Distance, eligible ApHC-registered Appaloosas must complete a minimum of 350 miles in ApHC-approved competitive or endurance trail rides.
Fourmile’s Kuna earned the 2008 Year-end High-mileage Endurance Appaloosa Award and the 2008 Year-end High-mileage Appaloosa of the Year Award. He competed in 10 competitive and endurance trail rides for a total 770 miles after earning double miles, which are awarded to “Best Condition” and “High-point” winners. The 1995 gelding also earned a 350-mile bronze medallion for 2008. Fourmile’s Kuna is proudly owned by Lisa Delp of Westminister, Md.

JOIN THE ApHC ON THE LAND OF LIBERTY TRAIL RIDE
Summer is just around the corner, and now is the time to plan a great vacation. If a relaxing trail ride in woodland forest with a little adventure along the way sounds like the ideal getaway, then reserve a spot on the Appaloosa Horse Club’s (ApHC’s) Land of Liberty Trail Ride in northwestern Pennsylvania, June 14-20.
The Land of Liberty Trail Ride’s base camp format provides the adventure of a different trail each day and offers entertainment each night. All breeds are welcome, though all participants must be ApHC members. Ride rates for adults are $335 and $275 for youth, ages 10 to 18 years. All meals are included, but be sure to bring feed for your horses. Applications for the Land of Liberty Trail Ride are due May 4.
