TWHBEASM IS NOW A MEMBER OF THE EQUESTRIAN LAND CONSERVATION RESOURCE
The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ AssociationSM (TWHBEASM), is excited to announce its new membership in the Equestrian Partnership Program of the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource. ELCR is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of land for equestrian activity.

Loss of open land has been identified as the greatest threat to the future of all equestrian sport, recreation, and industry. By educating horse people and encouraging partnerships with conservationists and other user groups at the local level, the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource is mobilizing thousands of equestrians to work for land access and protection in their communities. We recognize that without such concerted efforts, the equestrian world as we know it is at great risk.

WHAT MAKES A GAITED HORSE ”GAITED”
I bet if you would ask this question, the answer would be different depending on the horse owner’s specific gaited breed. Yet for all the difference they would like to think their breed possess, they are all considered “gaited”. Now the word “gaited” in itself is misleading. All horses are gaited. They perform all types of gaits. The trot is a gait. The pace is a gait. Yet to an owner of a Tennessee Walking or a Missouri Foxtrotter, either of those gaits would not be acceptable. Probably a more accurate description would be a “soft gait”. In the horse world the gaited horses are known for their extremely smooth ride that you can ride all day. Now I have been told that there are horses with smooth trot. That is like saying one brand of peanut butter is better tasting than another. But it is not steak. So what makes these horses so smooth? I think at this point a definition would be helpful. For a horse/mule to be consider “gaited”, it must perform a 4-beat gait, evenly or unevenly timed, lateral or diagonal, as their intermediate gait (second gear) with no trot or pace. A trot or pace is a 2-beat gait. One happens to be diagonal and one is lateral. The reason a 4-beat gait is smooth is that any one time; there is a least one foot on the ground. In a 2-beat gait, at one point, all the feet are off the ground. This is known as “suspension”. And when the feet land, unless you are posting, the landing is usual jarring. An evenly timed gait is “1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4”. An unevenly timed gait is”12..34..12..34..12..34. The more evenly timed the gait is timed, the smoother the ride. Now within each specific gaited breed, there will be some horses that are diagonal and some than are lateral. There will be some difference on how you will train a lateral horse verses a diagonal horses. A Tennessee walking horse tends to be a more lateral horse. A Missouri Foxtrotter is a more diagonal horse. The South American gaited breeds tend to be lateral. Is a lateral horse smoother than a diagonal horse? You will find smoothness is a very personal thing.
Mainly, because we are built differently. What is smooth for me will not necessarily be smooth for you. So if you are looking to buy a gaited horse for the first time, ride a number of them. Try the different breeds. Just like anything else. Each breed has its pros and cons.

Walking to Victory
Howard Schatzberg Photography
When Jolene Mangum and Shelly Angel packed up Sundrop’s Fahrenheit (Chisum) and Spook’s Rain (Romeo) to head for Castle Rock, Colorado, they had no idea they would bring home national titles from the 2007 North American Pleasure Gaited Horse World Championship held September 7-9. A year ago, Chisum paced instead of walking; Shelly was still recovering from major knee surgery. According to trainer Barbara Hanes, Chisum “dominated the Western AOT, Two-Gait division, winning first place in both the Western Pleasure and Trail Pleasure classes.” To win, he had to beat last year’s Western Trail champion. In the Open Championship Tennessee Walking Horse (TWH) Two-Gait grand championship class, Chisum and Jolene finished fourth, just behind three professional trainers. Shelly, just back to riding after four months off, placed fourth in her first class, TWH English Pleasure Amateur Two-Gait. After that, she shook the cobwebs off and came back to win the TWH Western Pleasure Two-Gaited class. She finished by steering Romeo to Reserve National Champion in the English Pleasure Open Two-Gaited championship class.

St. Louis National Charity Horse Show Receives Additional
ASHA Grand National Money
Exhibitors at this year’s St. Louis National Charity Horse Show will have more to celebrate with two new Grand National classes. The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) has just announced it will give the St. Louis show $6,000 in additional Grand National money because the show is an ASHA Regional Championship Show for Region 5.

The two classes that will now be recognized as Grand National are the Three-Gaited Grand Championship ($3000) and the Five-Gaited Pleasure Championship ($3000). They join the Hunter Country Pleasure Championship ($1800) to round out the show’s three Grand National classes.

Copper State Peruvian Paso News
The fall season is not far off even though it’s hard to believe with 110º heat. Equestrian activities are beginning and the Copper State Peruvian Paso Club is gearing up for an exciting season. With hopes of attracting new members along with staying in contact with the “faithful long time regulars” the club has mailed flyers to a large number of Peruvian Paso owners throughout the state.

Starting the season was a meet and greet open house held September 28th at B.E.L. Peruvians in the Rio Verde area. Hosts were Liz and Bernie Potof. Bill Chase, Arizona regional representative for our national association, NAPHA (North American Peruvian Horse Association), gave a short presentation on the organization, its history and goals. As president of the Copper State Peruvian Club, Bill gave a presentation on the club and gave an update on the upcoming activities.

Kelly Powers on Lea Poema, owned by La Estancia Alegre. 2X Champion Open Performance Horse, Reserve Open Performance Horse, 3X Champion Amateur Performance Mare, 3X Champion of Champions Performance Mare. Poema has won Champion of Champions Breeding Mare titles in other shows as well.
The glitter and glamour of Las Vegas was the perfect background to showcase the Peruvian Horse. The Gold Rush Classic held June 29, 30 and July at the South Point Casino and Equestrian Center was a smashing success. It is likely it will be considered not only one of the best shows of the 2007 season, but one of the best Peruvian Horse shows ever. It was a combined regional championship show with three nonconferring judges. This show hosted by Centennial State Peruvian Horse Club of Colorado, Rio Grande Peruvian Horse Club of New Mexico, and Mission Trails Horse Club of California offered something for everyone. Judges were: Enrique Rizo-Patron of Lima, Peru, a highly respected international judge of the Peruvian horse and a successful breeder; Kim Montee of Texas, who started in the breed as a junior rider who progressed in her riding to win National Titles and has been judging for 10 years; and Belisario de las Casas, an active breeder and promoter of the Peruvian horse, and an internationally renowned judge of the Peruvian Horse for 25 years including 2 years as judge of the National Peruvian Horse Show in Peru. Given the great advantages of 3 shows in one: great competition, one trip for you and your horses, less transportation, hotel, and meal costs, less time away from home, and the chance for host clubs to pool financial recourses, I am astounded that more horse clubs and breeds don’t do more combining of shows.

Historic Accord Reached Regarding Registration of the Peruvian Horse
There has been much confusion regarding registration of the Peruvian Horse (aka Peruvian Paso). Prior to 2005 there were two National Peruvian Paso organizations: PPHRNA (Peruvian Paso Horse Registry of North America) and AAOBPPH (American Association of Owners and Breeders of Peruvian Paso Horses). Both organizations registered horses and maintained a stud book; had a board of directors, bylaws, and rules; pointed regional horse shows, gave out awards to horses competing; and conducted their own national horse show. For years there was talk amongst the Peruvian Horse owners of a merger between the two organizations. That talk became a reality and NAPHA (North American Peruvian Horse Association) was formed. NAPHA accepts into its registry all horses already registered with the AAOBPPH, PPHRNA, ANCPCPP and PHAC (Peruvian Horse Association of Canada). Registrations of previously nonregistered horses or foals occur in accordance with the written policies of NAPHA, which includes DNA testing and Parental Verification.
