“Adventure In Brazil” … Ron Hevener, The Selket Arabians
There wasn’t much time to think – no time to second-guess – and no
turning back. I was on a plane for Sao Paolo – jetting to the Brazilian
Arabian Horse Nationals. Against a background of political unrest and
uncertainty, I was believing in what “can” be, instead of what “can’t”
… I was flapping my wings with every drop of my strength – and soaring
into the greatest adventure of my life.
It had been two years since the founder of The Selket Arabians had left
his beloved herd of horses in my hands. Things hadn’t been easy during
that time, and I had made some mistakes along the way. Managing a
famous herd of nearly a hundred horses, between three farms in two
countries wasn’t a job for the faint-hearted. Not only were there
feeding and veterinary decisions to be made, there was also the
responsibility of continuing to develop and market a bloodline based on
horses of international achievement, going back more than half a
century.

With a combination of a warm smile, encouraging comments, a humble attitude, and a striking amount of horsemanship, eighteen-year-old Kara Wintersteen won over the judges and earned herself the Premier Equestrian Sportsmanship Award at the Estes Park Arabian Horse Show. She and BB Princess Liyah, a nine-year-old Arabian mare, competed in a variety of classes and whether she missed a class or missed a lead, Wintersteen was never heard to complain, and always gave her horse credit for her winnings. After having to scratch her morning dressage test due to a delay on the trail course, Wintersteen was given the chance to ride the test at the end of the schedule, just before the halter class was scheduled to begin. She rode a beautiful dressage test before high tailing it out of the gate to strip off her tack for just in time for the halter class.
Premier Equestrian, one of the largest suppliers of dressage arenas, horse jumps, arena footing and stable accessories, was pleased to name Wintersteen the first Sportsmanship Award recipient as she obviously embodies the key attributes of a good sport. Heidi Zorn, president of Premier Equestrian, congratulated Wintersteen on her wins and on her lovely attitude. “Kara is a fantastic competitor and truly puts her horse and her fellow competitors before herself,” said Zorn. “The show staff here noted how she rode in the Arabian Mounted Native Costume class and then came out and helped one of the other competitors get ready so they could compete. This is the sort of deed we are looking to recognize with the Sportsmanship Award.”

New Venue Same Great Canadian Nationals
The Canadian National Arabian & Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show will make its debut at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, August 15-20, 2011. In April the AHA Board of Directors voted to approve the move of “Canadian Nationals” from Regina, Saskatchewan to its new home in Brandon where “the facilities are designed for horse shows [and] has management in-tune to horse show needs,” said Arabian Horse Association (AHA) President Lance Walters in a March 22 letter to membership.
Canadian Nationals, produced by AHA of Aurora, Colo., attracts exhibitors from about 40 states and six provinces to compete in 187 classes of halter, saddle seat, driving, side saddle, western pleasure, Arabian mounted native costume, trail, reining, working cow, hunter pleasure, jumping, show hack, and dressage. Unlike any other national show produced by the AHA, Canadian Nationals features competition in amateur, youth, open and select divisions, providing an option for many different kinds of riders. Horses have to qualify to show at Canadian Nationals. They earn qualification points by either showing at A-rated Arabian shows and Regional shows or at open show depending on the division.

AHA One Day Show Program
The AHA 1 Day Show Concept is simple. It provides areas of the country with lower show horse populations, and/or smaller clubs an opportunity to hold AHA qualifying shows that should be financially feasible for their circumstances. Fees and expenses are to remain low for the club or group sponsoring the show, so they can in turn pass on the savings to the exhibitors. Facility requirements need not be that of the "typical Arabian show", and may not even have stalling. The outcome is a more affordable way for many of our Arabian exhibitors to show their horses, receive qualifications, and remain involved with the breed.

Arabian Judges & Stewards Points Of Emphasis II
Administrative Penalties in Halter Breeding Classes When administering penalties it is important to remember your horsemanship and horse sense in halter breeding classes. It is also important to be consistent with what you saw, not what you thought you saw. Example: a horse rearing from either intimidation or aggression as opposed to a young horse that is possibly being playful. These suggested guidelines for Halter penalty points should help all judges and exhibitors in adjudicating and exhibiting Arabian and Half-Arabian horses.

It makes sense that the Arabian Horse Association’s Amateur of the Year would be the owner of the High Point Horse of the Year—it’s happened before. Laura Wolsey of Langley, B.C. and her gelding O Lordy++// (The Firelord+/ x Hi Passion) were recently given the AHA annual honor. In 2010 however, the AHA High Point Horse was also named Equine Canada’s High Point Horse for Breed Sport, the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) equivalent for breed affiliates. “This was a specific goal for me this year…I knew it would be hard because I only had one horse…needless to say it was really exciting to win both the Horse and Amateur awards,” says Laura Wolsey.
Wolsey earned 580 points at 10 shows. Some of the year’s highlights included three wins at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, a championship at Canadian Nationals and a championship at Sport Horse Nationals. Along the way, Wolsey hit five different regional shows traveling a total of about 11,000 miles to reach places like Monroe, Wash., Santa Barbara, Calif., and Scottsdale, Ariz. from her home in Langley, B.C.

Earning 522.5 points might come naturally for the 2010 Youth Amateur High Point Champion Alexandria Desiderio, from Chester, New Jersey. "It kinda happened by accident—I didn't go out of my way—I just show so much now, it's crazy," says Desiderio. But you can't really say Desiderio's points came easily; unless 30-plus hours a week in the saddle sounds easy.
Desiderio came by her 522.5 points with the help of three horses at 13 shows, including Youth Nationals and Sport Horse Nationals. Simply Irrisistible+ (Apple Hill Ahrah x Stardancer), TL Foolin Around+// (JA Baheem Sharaab x Irish), and Oration (Dormane x Ortie) were her primary mounts with Simply Irrisistible as her favorite "because she's mine," admits Desiderio. With the support that comes along with parents and a brother who are trainers, the only girl of four children says she didn't feel much pressure throughout the 2010 show season. "I didn't have any pressure, it just came along," says Desiderio.

ARHA Member’s Scottsdale Prospect Sale Horse Listing
Dear Reining Horse Owners,
ARHA would like to re-introduce a program designed especially to help you as an owner and /or breeder of Arabian and 1/2 Arabian reining horses, get your horses in front of prospective buyers.
At Scottsdale 2011 we again be offering our ARHA sale horse listing for the second year. This is designed to help you get the “word out” that you have horses at the show available for sale and let buyers know how to find you.
An ARHA “Sale List” will be part of the official program with information on each horse available as well as a map of the stabling indicating where each sale horse is located. In addition, a daily “preview time” will be assigned to the reining arena so that buyers will know when and where sale horses may be seen. Each listed sale horse will be given a Lot # (like an entry number) to be worn during this preview and it will correspond with the list. We will encourage owners and trainers to have this lot # displayed any time the sale horse is out being ridden. That way anyone can quickly reference the sale list to see which horse is on display

The $10,000 U.S. National Champion is Back!
The Arabian Horse Association (AHA) announced today that the big U.S. National payout for which the Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes (Sweepstakes) program has long been known is back-and in a big way. U.S. Nationals Champions can now earn $10,000 in certain classes, which hasn't been paid since 2005. Getting back to basics as a breeding program was the push behind the new changes. The Breeders Sweepstakes Commission has re-established the breeder as first priority, and they've selected classes to pay out that showcase the breeding of exceptional horses.
Now more than $1.4 million is available every year through Sweepstakes. Up to $25,000 is available for Arabian and $15,000 for Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian per Sweepstakes designated classes at the 2011 U.S. Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma from Oct. 21-29, 2011. At this flagship event only, an Overall 3 Year-Old & Under In-Hand Champion and Reserve and Overall 4 Year-Old & Over In-Hand Champion and Reserve will be named following a final presentation and judging of champion and reserve in-hand horses. Arabians earn $15,000 and $7,500 respectively for champion and reserve with Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabians earning a corresponding $10,000 and $5,000 if they are eligible in the Sweepstakes program.

Looking for Sponsorship
Dear Representative,
My name is Lexi Hampton. I am fifteen years old, and i live in Cumming, Ga. I have been showing Arabian horses since i was eight years old. I started out leasing a horse when i was nine. I won many regional championships on him as well as a Youth National Top Ten (Top ten in the Nation). When i was eleven, my parents bought me a horse named CBSDahzzle. She was my entire world, and my best friend. Dahzzle and i won nine or ten Regional championships, as well as three more Youth National Top Tens. We also got top ten (third) at the Arabain/Half Arabian Canadian Nationals. My family was hit hard by the recession, and they could not afford to keep my horse. Everything was taken away from me, because of money. Personally i so not think that money should keep me from following my dream of winning a national championship someday. Currently, I just ride my friends horses with them for fun. I also compete on my school equestrian team. Showing Arabians can open up scholarship opportunities. My old Arabian farm, Iron Horse Farms, is offering me a free lease on a Purebred Arabian Hunter Horse, if i can find some sponsors. Anything will help! I know there is a lot more information needed before you just jump in to something like this, and i am willing to give you anything you will need. Please email me back if you are interested in helping me make my dream come true!

Hadji Halef Omar (Centavo x ZA Sabbaths Joy), a 1992 grey gelding, owned by Sephanie Palmer-DuRoss of Queen Creek, Ariz. has been named the 2010 AHA Distance Horse of the Year. The 10-year veteran of endurance competition has taken Palmer-DuRoss over 5,810 miles, a journey for which she is very grateful. "I am nominating Hadji for the Distance Horse of the Year Award in appreciation for all the beautiful places he has taken me and for the places we have yet to see," says Palmer-DuRoss.
"Hadji" has 112 finishes out of 114 starts with 86 finishes in the top 20. Hadji has finished in the Top Ten of half of the endurance rides he's finished with two wins and five best conditions. Together, Palmer-DuRoss and Hadji have finished 14 Pioneer rides, totaling 2,795 miles, an especially impressive feat since Pioneer rides are multi-day events consisting of 155 miles that must be completed with the same horse and rider team. "Asking your horse to do a ride and have them sound and ready to go again the next day and the next day after that requires careful management and a special horse," says Palmer-DuRoss.

Alexandria Desiderio of Chester, New Jersey has just been named the 2010 High Point Youth by the Arabian Horse Association. This extremely talented ninth grader is an honor student in addition to helping with daily chores at her family’s 60 acre Tranquillity Farm, where her parents, Ricci and Stephanie are trainers. Their family works, trains and shows together at both open and breed competitions.
The AHA Amateur Achievement Award program began in 2002 and tracks the points of individual adult and youth amateur riders and handlers over the course of a year.
Alexandria earned 522.5 points in 2010, more than 100 points over the nearest competitor. This was her first year of being named to the top riders list. The Desiderios are no strangers to this list - her brother Michael won in 2005 and brother Anthony placed several times.
When asked if it was difficult being in her older brothers’ shadows, she shakes her head. “I never gave up. I knew that if I kept working hard and practicing, I would make it to the winner’s circle!”

| Oration winning Supreme Champion Sport Horse |
Ricci & Stephanie Desiderio have set the standard of excellence in Arabian sport horses for many years. They have created a dynasty of unprecedented success for themselves and their students beyond others’ reach. The list of champion horses and riders under their tutelage reads like a Who’s Who of the Arabian world.
Based at their Tranquillity Farm in Chester, NJ, this family demonstrates that hard work and dedication are necessary ingredients for achieving a supreme level of success. This modern, impressively designed facility is the ultimate training ground for the serious competitor. At the 2010 Sport Horse Nationals alone, the Tranquillity team won Supreme Champion Sport Horse, 14 National Championships, 3 Reserve National Champions and 32 Top Tens.
Both Ricci and Stephanie are accomplished trainers and together their children and students dominate the hunter and equitation rings at both open and breed shows. With Stephanie’s background in hunters and Ricci’s experience with Arabians, it’s easy to see why they excel in their chosen field. Their four children also emulate their parents’ work ethic and devotion, as demonstrated by their winning records.
