USEF Program for Youth Reiners
 |
| Alex Mitten |
In 2006, the USEF approved a new program for young reiners – the USEF Youth Reining Championship. The program is open to Youth Riders in three age groups: 13 and under, 14-18, and 19-21. Throughout the year, shows may apply to the USEF and hold special qualifying classes. This is NOT an equitation or horsemanship based competition. The classes will be run according to NRHA/USEF reining rules and patterns except: stallions may not be ridden; riders need not own their horse; riders may only show one horse per class; riders may show more than one horse through the qualifying period (points will apply to the rider); competitors must be members of USEF in order to participate; and horses must have a USEF I.D. number. The qualifying period ends 45 days prior to the competition. This year, the USEF will hold the Championship competition at the NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City in June.

She Rescued a Horse and Gave Up Her Legs
 |
| Kelly Boccia |
 |
| Kelly Boccia |
Can you image waking up one morning and within hours you were paralyzed from the waist down? It is a horrifying thought and the reaction is the same-it’s unimaginable!
On September 13, 2008 Kelly Boccia awoke to what can only be described as a horrifying, scary and life altering experience. ‘I woke up with sharp burning pains radiating up and down both my legs and within 3 hours I could not feel my legs or walk.”
The cause? “Well a few weeks prior, I had jumped into a dairy manure retention pond to rescue an Arabian Stallion. The stallion had gotten loose and in his efforts to escape being caught had leaped into the pond. The top layer of the pond is thick with green algae and witnesses think the horse was unable to tell the difference between the pond and the surrounding thick green grass. It soon became evident that the horse would not be able to get out on his own and that someone was going to have to go in with a rope in order to drag him to safety. The farm workers just stood by and no else seem willing to step up to the plate. I didn’t even consider my own safety and jumped into the green scum and slipped the noose around the horse’s neck and the both of us were pulled out of the pond. Since the horse had submerged underwater, the veterinarian was concerned about the horse contracting a bacterial pneumonia infection and immediately treated him with antibiotics. “

Bachir Bserani Releases New Audio CD Related to his Book "Authentic Arabian Horse Names"
I am sending this message today to all my friends and clients that have purchased my book Authentic Arabian Horse Names. I want to announce to you that I have just released a new audio CD whereby I speak all of the names in my book. I first pronounce the name in Arabic and I then give you the English meaning. And as a special bonus to my listeners, I have included on the CD a never before published short story based on the legendary desert Arabian mare Faridah.
Kellie and I produced this CD in a very limited quantity so I believe in time it will be a valuable collector’s item. The cover of the CD is graced with the beautiful painting by Andre Pater, “When Bargaining Gets Tight” and the CD itself features a beautiful black Arabian stallion running across the desert. I am very proud of this work and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed producing it.

Defamation & the Horse Industry, By: Mike Beethe, Esq.
Everyone deserves the right to have their reputations protected from false statements. This right is often of great importance and value in the horse industry. With the relatively small size of the horse industry, one’s reputation is often his or her best asset. The law of defamation grants each person protection of their valuable reputation.
Defamation can occur in many different situations. In some cases, when a business relationship comes to a close, the parties involved do not end of the best of terms. Also, competition can also bring out the worst in people. Often hurt feelings or a disappointed outcome will result in bad things being said by one party about another. Sometimes, people just like to gossip and spread rumors about others. In certain cases, those statements could fall into the category of defamation, resulting in liability of the person making the statement.
