ANNE ALBERT WINS 2016 NRCHA DERBY NON PRO LIMITED CHAMPIONSHIP
Cliffhanger, thriller, close call, photo finish – any number of suspenseful adjectives could accurately describe the road to the Derby Non Pro Limited Championship for Anne Albert of Roy, Washington. It involved a tie, followed by another tie, the possibility of a co-Championship, and finally, a cow work-off to decide the title once and for all.

“I’ve always wanted to come to this horse show, and to come here the first time and win it – I’m ecstatic,” Albert said.

After the first two events, the rein work and herd work, Albert and her gelding, White Knight Time (One Time Pepto x Little Lady Stylish x Smart Little Uno), were tied for first place with Erin Mendes and Recklessly Abandoned (Smart Little Pepinic x Wright Now Ima Star x Lenas Wright On). Both riders had 424.5 composite scores. A third rider, Linda Wood, was just a half-point behind them heading into the third phase, the cow work.

SONYA DISTEFANO WINS 2016 NRCHA DERBY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
When Sonya DiStefano wrapped up her preliminary runs, scoring a 632.5 at the 2016 NRCHA Derby, she not only qualified for the Novice Non Pro finals – she also earned the Amateur Championship!

DiStefano, a 17-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is showing in her first NRCHA Premier Limited Age Event on her first derby horse, who she has only been riding for a couple of months – but she didn’t let the pressure keep her from shining in the show pen.

“I was intimidated and nervous to come here for the first time, because I haven’t showed in a big derby, just our local ones. I just showed my horse like I did at home, and he was good,” the polite, soft-spoken teen said.

APHA Rewards Paints at 2016 National Reining Breeders Classic
FORT WORTH, Texas – For the third consecutive year, high-scoring registered Paint Horses and their exhibitors took home beautiful trophy buckles at the National Reining Breeders Classic, thanks to APHA. The show, which took place April 17–24 in Katy, Texas, is one of the nation’s richest National Reining Horse Association-approved events, boasting purses exceeding $1 million.

Four Paints ended up in the Top 10 of the prestigious Open Classic Finals with impressive scores exceeding 226.5. According to show management, approximately one-third of all horses showing this year were Paint-bred, most of which were already registered through APHA. Five horses eligible for APHA registration papers joined the family at the NRBC, thanks to on-site registration options, and one—Yes Ima Gunner—even took home a buckle in the Youth division, thanks to the last-minute decision.

Sarah Locker Wins 2016 NRBC Non Pro Championship
Katy, Texas – Although not unprecedented, attaining back-to-back National Reining Breeders Classic championships on the same horse is exceptional. With the steady influx of high-caliber horses each year, competition is always formidable.

So it’s easy to understand that Sarah Lynn Locker’s 2016 victory on Friday evening is quite the feat. Last year, she and her horse, Heavy Duty Chex, won the title with a 220. This year they returned to the Great Southwest Equestrian Center to attempt another win.

Working as the second-to-last draw, Locker and “Heavy D” laid down a picture-perfect run which resulted in a 225! “I don’t think it’s real,” she said of winning the Championship. “I tell everyone that last year hasn’t really sunk in so I don’t know that this one will, either. It’s such a cool feeling and this is one of the greatest horse shows you can go to, so to win it again – or even make the finals – is huge. To win it on the same horse is unreal.”

Jason Vanlandingham and Not Ruf At All Earn Win NRBC Open Championship
It brought the audience to its feet. With stomping boots, clapping hands, whistles, cheers, whoops and hollers, the crowd at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center cheered the 2016 National Reining Breeders Classic Open Champion into the history books.

As draw 29 of the 30-horse finals, Jason Vanlandingham and Not Ruf At All entered the Coliseum arena. From the first stop to the last, the crowd was with them. With NRHA Futurity and Derby titles under their belt, the only leg of reining’s triple crown that had eluded them was the NRBC – and this was the six-year-old stallion’s last chance.

With even the competition cheering them on, the duo rose to the occasion, marking a 231 – one of the highest scores in NRBC history. “I’m relieved, excited – there is a flood of emotions. I’m so very humbled,” Vanlandingham said. “I’m thankful to have a great horse, a great family to support us, and a God that loves us. It’s been an amazing day for sure.”

Open Letter From NRHA President Rick Clark
Dear NRHA Membership,

Can you imagine that this organization that I am so proud to be a part of is entering our 50th anniversary? It seems like yesterday our founders were setting the pattern at the first Futurity at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. We have made so many positive strides the last 50 years, and this past year has been absolutely outstanding.

A new international headquarters. A new membership card that you have or soon will be receiving. A pinnacle event that horse enthusiasts make special plans to come sit in the stands that once awarded $10,500 to now awarding more than $2 million in prizes and cash. A membership that once was less than 100 to now finishing 2015 with a 4.6% increase in membership, and the largest membership since 2008. NRHA has come a long way and you should be celebrated for all of these accomplishments and the future success of this outstanding organization.

National Reining Horse Association Shows Tremendous Growth Entering Into the 50th Anniversary!

The National Reining Horse Association is gearing up for a spectacular 2016, and the best way to start the celebration is to celebrate all new and returning members!

Oklahoma City, Okla.– The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has more than one thing to celebrate as they enter into 2016. First and foremost, this is NRHA’s 50th Anniversary year. From starting with the first Futurity in 1966 with less than 100 members during the All American Quarter Horse Congress, to celebrating the 50th Running of the Futurity in Oklahoma City this past month, NRHA has crunched the numbers and is proud to announce several signs of growth in the sport of reining.

A Jewel of an Addition to the Million Dollar Sire Roster
A Jewel of an Addition to the Million Dollar Sire Roster

Oklahoma City, Okla., January 8, 2016 – There are some who would say that Like A Diamond isn’t the real deal. He’s never earned a penny in the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) show pen or represented his country in International Reining competition, but a look at his pedigree belies those facts when it comes to his progeny and their potential to excel in the sport. By NRHA Million Dollar Sire Grays Starlight and out of Diamonds Jewel Wood, Like A Diamond first came to Reining prominence in 2001 as the sire of NRHA Open Futurity Champion RR Star with a young Andrea Fappani at the reins. RR Star made history as the first Paint Horse to win the NRHA Futurity and to make things more exciting he did it following a run-off. He then went on to top the 2003 NRHA Derby with Tim McQuay riding

Smart Like Juice NRHA's Newest Three Million Dollar Sire

All in the Family
NRHA recognizes and honors Million Dollar Earners in the Sire, Rider, and Owner categories and there is a family/entity who has achieved the much sought after honor in all three categories. Smart Like Juice, Jose Vazquez and Smart Like Juice Inc. comprise the family of overachievers. Now we celebrate Smart Like Juice ascending to Three Million Dollar Sire status! This 1994 son of Smart Little Lena out of Jessies Oak by Docs Oak was bred by NCHA icon Lindy Burch, Weatherford, Texas. It was good fortune for the sport of Reining when “Juice” was purchased by Justin Zimmerman in 1997 and pointed in the direction of the reining pen. He was shown in the 1997 NRHA Futurity by NRHA Lifetime Achievement Award winner Ken Eppers, finishing seventh. When ownership passed to Vazquez/Smart Like Juice Inc. the late Ed Fear took the reins and competed very successfully on the new acquisition. Vazquez also put earnings on the stallion who then went on to the breeding shed having earned $56,096 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings, which at the time was a significant amount!
