NRHA EUROPEAN NOMINATIONS ON THE RISE
The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) introduced the NRHA European Nomination Program last fall to enhance purses at the NRHA European Futurity. To help kick off program nominations, NRHA staff are assisting members with questions and paperwork, as well as completing nominations onsite during the 2010 NRHA European Futurity in Kreuth, Germany. With four days of the show remaining, more than 100 total nominations have been received so far. This number completely surpasses expectations considering that the deadline is more than three weeks away. The deadline to nominate 2009 European-born foals for 230€ is March 31, 2010.

The National Reining Breeders Classic, held annually at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas, is known for million dollar payouts and an elaborate setup. Contestants and fans are treated to an array of food and drink, and the excitement reaches its crescendo when the actual Draw begins. One by one the finalists are called to the front of the room, where beautiful blue crystal wine glasses are displayed. When the finalist picks up their commemorative wine glass, they find their final's position on the bottom. 14 Nations Competing at the 2010 NRHA European Futurity & NRHA Show
Free Admission for Visitors – NRHA Offers Free Livestream

The 2010 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) European Futurity & NRHA Show will kick off in just a few days. Europe’s top Reining show is scheduled for March 7-13, 2010 at the Kreuth facility in Germany. Tough riders and horses from 14 nations will compete for a total purse in excess of $281,000 – for more added money than any other NRHA show held outside of the U.S.A.

The NRHA European Futurity promises to bring top-notch trainers and non pros from all over the world riding the finest four-year-old reining horses. 14 countries will battle for bragging rights in Kreuth, not only to have champions hailing from their country, but also to say those champions were bred in their homeland. In 2009, both the NRHA European Open Level 4 Champion and Level 4 Non Pro Champion were bred in Europe: Sail On Top Whizard by The Netherland’s Monray Quarter Horses and Level 4 Non Pro Champion RS Linkwood Jac by Italy’s Claudio Risso and Roberta’s Stable. Both nations look for the repeat in 2010.

Tom’s Training Tips
As an NRHA Professional, a large part of my business has always focused on coaching Non-pros and Youth riders. Over the years, I’ve help many reiners with varying degrees of experience. Regardless of their background, I’ve found that there are several common problems that can be easily address. One of the biggest concerns that needs to be watched centers around body position on a horse.

If you’ve ever listened to trainers coach their clients at a show, you’ve probably heard, “Relax!, Sit back!, Relax your back!” What does this mean as surely a person can’t be that physically relaxed when running a horse to a slide or spinning one as fast as it can. What I really mean to say, when I’m shouting this at a student is, keep your body centered and soft. I do not mean to go limp but rather engage your core muscles and allow your hips to move freely with the horse. You also want to make sure that your shoulders remain even with or lower back or behind your hips. In other words, make sure you stay sitting back. This will make it easier for you to stay in sync with your animal while allowing him or her to perform their best.
Just remember that a horse is always going to mirror what your body is doing on its back. So, if your body is stiff and forward, you’re going to cause your horse to be more rigid and more forward feeling. It might also cause your steed to be cranky. When your lower back and hips are fluid and move with your horse’s stride, not only will you feel more comfortable, but your four-legged partner will also be more relaxed and willing to execute his maneuvers. Think of it this way – how could a horse be happy and confident when the rider’s going against its motion?

New aged event for reining horses
The NRHA and the NRHA futurity were created by trainers and breeders, over the years they have grown the sport to a point where it is very difficult to make changes that benefit both the upper and lower levels of the sport, this can be seen by the split opinions of the new futurity plan.

The following idea is to create an event that will promote the smaller breeders and encourage participation by all levels of Reiners. It will award all levels of Reiners with purses dependent on participation at each level.

I am not going to develop this event I am only offering a suggestion and my help in promoting and organizing it. If you are interested in exploring this type of event let me know and I will organize a brainstorming session with all interested parties.
