National Reining Horse Association Concludes Winter Meeting

The National Reining Horse Association concludes a tremendously productive and overwhelmingly successful meeting of NRHA committees and the Board of Directors in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) concluded five days of productive meetings with NRHA’s top leaders this past week in Scottsdale, Ariz. Focusing on the association’s core business objectives for 2015, NRHA’s Board of Directors also met to guide the future of the sport of Reining. Among several items discussed included revisions to the 2015 NRHA Derby and NRHA Futurity Conditions, the 2015 NRHA Derby Schedule and the NRHA Nomination Conditions. In addition, the association made tremendous advances in the sport of Reining by approving a further defined penalty chart for the NRHA Animal Welfare & Medications Policy (11-07-27, not including Europe).

Oklahoma City, OK February 12, 2015 – At the National Reining Horse Association’s most recent Board of Directors meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Hall of Fame Committee recommended to the Board of Directors several nominees for consideration for induction into the NRHA Hall of Fame and consideration for the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. The board voted to induct Terry Thompson, Miss Tinseltown and Smart Spook into the NRHA Hall of Fame. Kenny Eppers and Bob Stinner will each receive the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. These highly-coveted honors will be celebrated at the NRHA Annual Awards Banquet on June 20, 2015 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

2015 NRHA Derby and 2015 NRHA Futurity Condition Updates
Important updates to the 2015 NRHA Derby and 2015 NRHA Futurity have been approved by NRHA’s Board of Directors and are now available online.

Oklahoma City, Okla., February 12, 2015 –The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is making plans now for the 2015 NRHA Derby that will be held June 20 – 27 at the Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. Thousands of spectators, exhibitors and horses attend the event each year with their eye on the most talented and beautiful reining horses in the world, plus approximately $1 million in cash, prizes and nominator incentives awarded there. Oklahoma City, Okla., January 29, 2015 ­­– Jordan Larson, Whitesboro, Texas, just became NRHA’s newest Two Million Dollar Rider. This milestone caps off Larson’s 2014 achievements. Not only was the NRHA Professional the 2014 NRHA Futurity’s Level 4 Open Co-Champion riding HDC Quarter Horses’ ARC Gunnabeabigstar and banking $139,916, but he was also the 2014 NRHA Top 20 Professionals’ highest money earner with $387,545, adding to his already robust earnings. His Futurity experience was made even more poignant when his wife, Taylor, won the 2014 Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity Levels 2 and 3 on Larson Performance Horses’ Wimpys Dolled Up. Larson was also a member of Team USA, competing at the 2014 FEI Alltech World Equestrian Games (WEG) and earning a Gold Medal in the team competition.

Inaugural World Para Reining Event
Excitement is mounting for the Arizona Sun Circuit show sponsored by the Arizona American Quarter Horse Association, where the first ever World Para Reining (WPR) approved classes will be held on January 30 and 31, at noon. The WPR is a new organization dedicated to fostering competitive reining events for disabled riders around the world. These classes represent the first events in the WPR series, which will award a championship saddle, a world champion title, and top-10 awards at the end of 2015.

WPR provides a format for Para riders to enjoy the sport of reining, and for older successful reining horses to have a valuable second career in the show pen. The WPR will help bring the Para community into mainstream reining by coordinating with AQHA, NRHA, and other approved organizations, to give Para riders many showing options and opportunities worldwide.
Most importantly, the WPR will welcome all levels of disabled riders who want to get started in reining. The WPR will facilitate the spread of para reining by hosting reining clinics, developing a coaching program, coordinating the pairing of riders with suitable reining horses, and connecting riders with people interested in sponsoring the sport.

NRHA is a worldwide organization dedicated to the promotion of the reining horse and the sport of Reining. Santa Hill Ranch, located in Campbell, New York, is a full service professional reining and breeding operation situated on 325-acres of scenic farmland and pastures with two beautiful state-of-the-art barns.

Santa Hill Ranch’s training and boarding barn includes a 125X250 foot indoor climate-controlled riding arena, 150X400 foot outdoor riding pen, 12X12 stalls, spacious tack and grooming area and wash bays with heated flooring and rubber mats. The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) held the first of two finals performances on Friday, December 5. The $232,000-added Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity. The show runs through December 6 at Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Okla.

This year’s Futurity had approximately 550 non pro entries and $600,000 in purse money. In all, nearly $30,000 will be paid in nominator incentives.

Oklahoma City, Okla. – November 7, 2014 – The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Board of Directors voted on November 3, during meetings in Oklahoma City, to maintain its Animal Welfare and Medications Policy for NRHA events held in locations outside of Europe.

Medication testing will continue in 2015 at NRHA events held in locations outside of Europe. The association’s Animal Welfare and Medications Policy, enacted in 2011, is a two-part program which also includes a protocol for events held in Europe and one for events held anywhere else.

The 39th edition of the IRHA/IRHBA/NRHA Futurity closed the show season for the sport of Reining. Over 520 horses made their way to Manerbio along with an enthusiastic crowd. In front of a full house, 41 finalists left their mark in the Palasturla arena vying for the titles in the Euro 112.500-added Open Futurity.
Taking top honors as well as the Level 4 Open Futurity title was the last horse-rider-combination to enter the seeded finals: Bernard Fonck and Lil Ruf Whiz N Tag (Whiz N Tag Chex x Lil Trouble Miss). Aboard the stallion owned by his wife Ann Poels Fonck, the NRHA Million Dollar Rider posted a 223. “This final was fantastic, I tried to push my horses a little more than I did in the go-rounds and it went well. I want to thank all the people who cheered for me, it was truly exciting.”
