Looking Back at a Lucrative 2011 and Forward to 2012
As 2011 rolls to an end, the NRHA is thrilled to look back at a year marked with moments to remember. Among the top of that list are the lucrative purses and nomination incentives distributed at the 2011 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show; the impressive sale of reining horses during the NRHA / Markel Insurance Futurity Prospect, Marketplace and Breeders Select Showcase Sales; as well as the addition of two NRHA-owned events, the NRHA Cowtown Classic and NRHA European Derby. The Association encourages horsemen to mark their calendars for these events in 2012!
NRHA Futurity Becomes Richer
The NRHA Futurity is the richest NRHA-approved show in the world – and it became even richer this year. The following are just a few examples of how much more money went into people’s wallets following the show:
The Futurity purse equaled more than $2 million in 2011 for a 28% increase over 2010
The total show, including the Adequan North American Affiliate Championships and ancillary classes, paid out $2.3 million in 2011 vs. $1.9 million in 2010
The Level 4 Open Champion earned $150,000, including the $7,500 nominator incentive
More than $100,000 went to nominators in the program’s first show
More than 80 horses have already earned their nomination fee back for their nominator (i.e. earned $300 or more in nominator incentive money alone)

Explanation of NRHA Futurity Payouts and Nominator Incentives
Nomination Program Impact
The NRHA Futurity saw a massive increase in added money due to the NRHA Nomination Program. According to NRHA Chief Financial Officer John Foy, with the addition of the North American Nomination Program’s added monies, there was an increase of more than $600,000 in added money with over $420,000 in the NRHA Open Futurity and $180,000 in the Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity. The total purse for just the Futurity was more than $2 million (a 28%+ increase). Nominators collected more than $100,000 – even if they didn’t still own the horse!
How to Read Futurity Results
When looking at NRHA Futurity results, please note that the amount “won” includes the 5% nominator incentive won by the horse.
In 2010, first place in the Level 4 Open Futurity paid $125,000. In 2011, the owner of the horse received $142,500 and the nominator received $7,500. This is a total of $150,000 earned by the horse.

Legendary Reiner Bill Horn Passes Away
 |
| Bill Horn |
The reining community lost a treasured family member on Dec. 9, 2011, at 7:25 p.m. when Bill Horn died peacefully at home in the arms of his wife of 25 years, Kim Horn. At age 73, he left us too soon, but it’s a comfort to know he lived the way he wanted to live and he died the way he wanted to die.
To those who watched him ride he was legend. To those he mentored, coached and supported, he was a hero. To everyone who knew him, he was loved. He was “BH.”
When BH won a 1965 run-off reining on Continental King in Dayton, Ohio, it inspired the creation of the National Reining Horse Association. There’s no way to know how many people he inspired to rein and get involved in the sport as a trainer, non-pro, owner and/or breeder, but we do know that every time Bill Horn showed a reining horse, he lit that fire.

Reining in Gilroy
Gabe Davide describes the sport of reining as "figure skating on a horse." It involves a series of orchestrated moves demonstrating the technical and athletic ability of the horse and rider with points awarded for skillfully completing maneuvers.
During competition, the rider must take the horse through a series of wide and tight turns at varying speeds, complete several fast stops and starts, smoothly execute varying speed transitions and perform other exhibitions of skill.
Reining is an international sport and its participants hope that one day it will be included in the Summer Olympics. For the riders and horses at the Buck N Horse Ranch in Gilroy and others like it, it is a hobby, something Davide says anyone can get involved in.

NRHA Apprentice Program
The Apprentice Program was designed to allow individuals who are current NRHA Non Pros to learn, train, and show under a member of the NRHA Professionals as an Open rider. This gives the Non Pro the opportunity to explore the possibility of becoming an NRHA Professional, without facing the three to five year wait should they decide not to continue as a professional trainer and remain a Non Pro. An apprentice can do so under one or more members of the NRHA Professionals concurrently or consecutively during the twelve month period. All earnings that an individual has on record will be used to determine their eligibility while participating in the Apprentice Program. At any time during the twelve months should an individual decide not to continue with his or her apprenticeship, they must continue to sit out of Non Pro competition and are not able to re-apply for Non Pro status until the end of the twelve months. At the end of the twelve month apprenticeship, the individual can do one of two things:
They may choose to remain an Open rider and completely relinquish Non Pro status. If this is the case, all previous Non Pro earnings will be backed out and any Open earnings accumulated during the apprenticeship will be used to determine eligibility.
Or they can re-apply for Non Pro status without having to wait 3-5 years before showing as a Non Pro. All earnings accumulated during the apprenticeship will be used to determine eligibility.
