By
Jan 13, 2008, 14:26
Upper level horses and riders from across the country will soon be gearing up for one of the USEA’s most successful programs—the Adequan USEA Gold Cup Series. The 2008 Series calendar, comprised of 13 events, includes the same events as last year with two notable changes. First, Woodside Horse Trials will again be included, but for 2008 the May event will be part of the Series instead of the August event as in previous years. In addition, the Wellpride American Eventing Championships will offer Gold Cup divisions, and will be held September 10-14 at Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois.
The first of the events kicks off March 14-16 in Tallahassee, Florida with the Red Hills Horse Trials and the season will finish with the Twin Rivers Horse Trials in Paso Robles, California on September 26-28.

Structure, Prizes, and Sponsors
Modeled somewhat after other successful sports series such as NASCAR, the Gold Cup Series is based on a cumulative points system, with horse-and-rider pairs earning points, prize money, and prizes at each event—which for 2007 included seven-dose packs of Adequan, brushing boots from Nunn Finer, fly sheets and No-Bow bandages from Back on Track, SCS3 field or dress boots and three-season jackets with the Gold Cup logo from Mountain Horse, saddle pads from Ogilvy Horse, grooming totes with Wellpride Omega-3 fish oil supplements from Wellpride, Nutrena feed, and World Equestrian Brands gift certificates. Additional sponsorship was provided by Cover-All Building Systems, UlcerGard, Platinum Performance, and Broadstone Equine Insurance Agency.
The Series runs at the Intermediate and Advanced levels with the Keepers of the Cup being the pairs that earn the most points at the end of the year. In 2007 the champions earned a grand prize Gold Cup trophy, prize money, and World Equestrian Brands prize packages. In addition, the Gold Cup champion at the Advanced level—which for 2007 was Becky Holder and her and husband Tom’s Courageous Comet—received a check from the USEA for $6,000 and the Intermediate champion—Will Coleman and Tivoli Farm’s Kiki du Manoir—received a check for $4,000. Advanced reserve champions, which in 2007 were Will Faudree and his Antigua, received a $3,500 Bit of Britain gift certificate, and Intermediate reserve champions Hawley Bennett and Pam and John Hudson’s SplendoroftheSun received a $2,000 Bit of Britain gift certificate.
