Dear Friend of the Kentucky Horse Park:

One of the greatest honors the Kentucky Horse Park has ever received came last week with the announcement that we are to be the recipients of a Special Eclipse Award.

The Eclipse is the highest award given in Thoroughbred racing and breeding. It is bestowed annually by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), the National Turf Writers Association and the Daily Racing Form on the nation’s best horses, trainers, owners, breeders, etc.

The Special Award's purpose is to “honor outstanding individual achievements in, or contributions to, the sport of Thoroughbred racing.” It has been the park’s mission from day one to be an ambassador for all breeds, including Thoroughbreds, and in particular for the American horse industry as a whole. We serve the horse, as he has served us so well throughout the centuries.

Many people (and even more horses) have contributed to the success of the Kentucky Horse Park during the past 30 years, which continues to reach new and higher pinnacles. There has always been a deep, abiding, intangible something that binds the hearts of man and horse. This relationship is the soul of the Kentucky Horse Park.
Kentucky governor, Steve Beshear, noted, “We are delighted that the Kentucky Horse Park, which honors horses of every breed, has received the highest recognition in the Thoroughbred industry. Jane and I have served on the Kentucky Horse Park Commission and the Foundation for many years. We have seen the tremendous amount of hard work, and the equal amount of affection, that have been invested in the park for the past 30 years. We couldn’t be happier for all of the people who have made the park a labor of love for so long.”
HORSeNEWS from the Kentucky Horse Park, January 15, 2008
Alex Waldrop, president and CEO of the NTRA said, “The Eclipse Award steering committee strongly believed that the Kentucky Horse Park was most deserving of the Special Award for its extraordinary contribution and dedication to the Thoroughbred industry and the wonderful experience that its millions of visitors have enjoyed over the years. The special care for the great racehorse John Henry in his retirement, and his most dignified passing in 2007, symbolizes the love and devotion of the men and women who work at the Kentucky Horse Park each day.”
Tandy Patrick, chair of the park’s governing body, the Kentucky Horse Park Commission, stated, “In everything we do, the Kentucky Horse Park pays tribute to the extraordinary relationship that exists between horses and humans. We are thrilled and grateful that our daily work is being acknowledged with a Special Eclipse Award.”
The 21st century is the golden age of the horse in America. They are our heroes, our partners and our friends, and as long as that relationship flourishes, the Kentucky Horse Park will be here to celebrate it.
My special thanks to everyone at the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the National Turf Writers Association and the Daily Racing Form, and to all the people and horses, past and present, who contributed so much to the Kentucky Horse Park and made it what it is today.
Sincerely,
John Nicholson
Executive Director

SAVE OUR HORSES (SOHO) FUND
In an effort to support the needs of unwanted, abused, and neglected horses, the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC), headquartered at the KHP, recently announced a new way to donate funds to promote the health and welfare of all horses in Kentucky. The Save Our Horses Fund (SOHO) was created as a part of KHC’s mission to care for the welfare of the horse.
The fund is administered by the KHC Health and Welfare committee which includes KHC Board members, individual KHC members, and equine rescue personnel. SOHO funding directly supports KHC programs including:
• Funding the Equine Safety Net, which feeds horses for a month when the owner has had an unexpected loss of job, or a medical emergency that reduces their income
• Supporting the Kentucky Large Animal Emergency Rescue, a volunteer effort which rescues horses involved in trailer accidents, fall into ravines, get stuck in mud, and other emergency situations.
• Supporting existing horse rescue facilities through grants and donations
• Providing Equine Abuse Investigation education for Animal Control Agencies and local officials
• Providing financial support for feeding horses and providing veterinarian care when a good Samaritan accepts a horse that has been confiscated due to its poor condition
• Evaluating and improving Kentucky's animal abuse statutes, as they apply to horses.
• Finding careers for horses who are not able to fulfill the purpose for which they were bred.
Funding from SOHO is also dispersed to qualified 501(c)3 non-profit organizations committed to horse health and welfare, through grants and donations awarded by the Horse Council throughout the year.
Additionally, SOHO funds will provide equine abuse investigation education for Animal Control Agencies and local county officials, and financial support for feeding horses and providing veterinarian care when a “good Samaritan” accepts a horse that has been confiscated due to its poor condition.
Tax deductible contributions may be made to the SOHO fund online at www.kentuckyhorse.org or by mail to Kentucky Horse Council, 4063 Iron Works Parkway, Suite 2, Lexington, KY 40511. For more information call 859-367-0509 or 800-459-4677.
