After earning triple tricolors the first week of the Horse Shows by the Bay show series in Traverse City, MI, Katherine Newman's winning momentum carried into the second week of competition as well. Seventeen-year-old Newman of Wellington, FL, competed in the older junior hunter divisions at Horse Shows by the Bay II, held from July 23-27, 2008. She trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry, at their hunter/jumper show stable, Allwyn Court.
In the Small Junior 16-17 Hunters, the young rider showcased Pirate for the owner Shaw Johnson Price. The duo, who earned the reserve championship during the first week of Horse Shows by the Bay, secured the championship ribbon after they won two firsts, a second, and two fifth place ribbons. Newman also rode Lifetime Guarantee in the older small juniors for Lisa McKee-Cole. The pair came home with a first, three seconds, and a fourth place ribbon, which sealed the reserve championship award.
Newman added another tricolor ribbon to Allwyn Court's tack room curtain when she piloted All The Answers for top honors in the Large Junior 16-17 Hunter division. Owned by Sherri Crawford, All The Answers captured three firsts and a second, which resulted in the division championship for the second week in a row.
"Pirate was awesome," commented Newman. "Lifetime Guarantee and All The Answers went great both weeks as well. I couldn't have been happier. I also showed Chellapo Z in the High Junior Jumpers for the first time," she noted. "I was sixth in the first class and clear and fourth in the speed. I'm really happy with how we did." Chellapo Z is owned by Mimi Abel-Smith of Middleburg, VA.
Newman will compete next at Horse Shows by the Bay II, scheduled for the week of July 30-August 3, 2008, in Traverse City, MI.
