Judson College sophomore Kari Dunn of Kingman, Ariz. will go down in history as the first student to choose the new equine-facilitated mental health concentration for her major.

“I have always enjoyed being around children," Dunn said. "I also enjoy being around horses and the thought of being able to combine the two to form a major and a career for my life is just what I was looking for!”

Dunn heard about the new major while participating in the work-study program at the Judson stables. Intrigued by the opportunities offered through this course of study, she decided this was the career she had been looking for and changed her course of study to add the equine therapy option.

As part of the development of this additional program of study, Judson students have taken field trips to Safety Net Academy in Mentor, Ala. as and Spirit of Hope Youth Ranch in Wilsonville. Both facilities utilize horses in rehabilitative therapy for mental health.

The addition of this new course of study offers a new career option for other students as well. The flexibility of the courses allows students to choose their own specialization while completing foundational courses in psychology and equine science.
