John Wayne beat lung cancer in 1964. He died 15 years later after a struggle with cancer of the stomach. During this difficult period, he became passionate about helping others fight “the big C.” In honor of John Wayne, his family created the John Wayne Cancer Foundation (JWCF) to bring courage, strength and grit to the fight against cancer. Since its founding in 1985, JWCF has supported research, education, awareness and support programs. JWCF has supported groundbreaking cancer research and education at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Louis Johnson was one of the most successful farmers, ranchers and feedlot owners in Arizona history. This did not go unnoticed. You see, The Duke himself also owned a large farm in Arizona. When Duke needed someone local to help oversee and protect his investments, he asked around about who was the best in the business. He soon had his answer. Duke and Louie thereafter formed a partnership, and friendship, lasting over 20 years.
The partnership became famous. By the time it was all said and done, Louie and Duke were partners in a farming operation covering over 14,000 acres, a state of the art feedlot operation running 85,000 head of cattle and a pure bred Hereford ranching operation including the famous 26 Bar ranch near Springerville, Arizona. The partnership also produced the annual 26 Bar bull sale for 18 consecutive years at their headquarters near Stanfield, Arizona.
After enjoying very successful lives, both men succumbed to cancer in their later years. The living relatives of both men are actively involved in fund raising for cancer research to this day. Hence the idea behind the Louie and The Duke Classics. The JWCF is the beneficiary of the net proceeds from the events.
The 4th Annual Louie and The Duke Classics are happening November 4th thru the 7th, 2010 in Casa Grande, Arizona. If prior Louie and The Duke Classics are any indication, then the 4th annual event should be nothing less than spectacular. Join us for a Golf Tournament, Dinner & Western memorabilia auction and a weekend of Team Roping! Throw in a Saturday night rodeo dance, a carnival for the young (and young at heart) and plenty of great vendors and you have one very fun filled weekend of none other than Louie and The Duke Classics. It is definitely one of the social events of the year in central Arizona!
You are personally invited to attend the “classics” this November. Help Duke and Louie continue their fight against Cancer!
