Sixteen-year-old entrepreneur Matt Austerman developed Mr. Ed’s Chips as a result of living on a Scottsdale ranch and seeing first-hand the disappointing results of typical wood shavings. He originally developed the mixture of recycled Pine, Douglas Fir and a special combination of garlic and other horse-safe herbs for personal use. Quickly, the demand and popularity escalated at his family’s ranch because the wood chips produce significant and substantial results. Mr. Ed’s Chips provide a sustainable, innovative, and effective solution to traditional horse bedding because of its mixture of natural fly repellent and its heavy consistency, making it less likely to blow away.

Unlike ordinary wood shavings, Mr. Ed’s Chips are heavy and actually make a difference in the horse’s stall. The thickness provides a comfortable bedding experience with the addition of garlic creating the natural fly repellent.
Mr. Ed’s Chips are reminiscent of the 1960’s television classic Mr. Ed, the Talking Horse. Johnny Haggard at Scottsdale Livestock initially realized the outstanding product that Matt had to offer. He began by ordering 20 bags and soon sold out of all the bags. Matt makes frequent deliveries to both Scottsdale Livestock stores because Mr. Ed’s Chips sell very quickly. “I appreciate Johnny believing in my product and helping me get started,” Matt added.

Matt encourages all horse owners to pick up a bag of Mr. Ed’s Chips to provide their horse with natural fly protection and bedding that should survive the upcoming monsoon season. They are sold in 40 pound bags for $6.00 each.

As well as producing and selling Mr. Ed’s Chips, Matt owns a vending machine route and works as a server at an assisted living home as well as attending junior college. “My favorite endeavor is the wood chip business. Go right to the source and ask the horse … and I’m sure he will tell you he loves my wood chips.”
