Lex Smurthwaite

FORT WORTH, Texas—The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) announced today that effective July 1, Lex Smurthwaite will become interim executive director of the organization, which includes 108,000 active members in 40 nations and territories around the world. Smurthwaite’s appointment follows an announcement by APHA’s current executive director, Jim Kelley, that he will leave to accept another position outside the organization.

For the past 12 years, Smurthwaite has served as manager of the association’s performance, racing and recreational riding departments, as well as international programs. Smurthwaite oversees worldwide projects related to horse shows, racing, trail rides and many other activities.

Paul Reinbolt, president of the APHA Executive Committee, expressed full confidence in Smurthwaite’s ability to carry on the work of the organization, which oversees and supports the activities of 111 regional clubs around the world.

Optimistic about the future, Smurthwaite said, "Our mission is clear. We will continue to preserve, promote and perpetuate the ideal qualities that have come to be admired in the American Paint Horse breed by so many people around the world. It’s a tremendous responsibility to carry on the efforts of so many people who have dedicated their lives to this organization. I know that through the cooperative efforts of our outstanding staff, deeply committed members and progressive executive committee, we will continue to achieve great things."

Smurthwaite will turn his immediate attention to the World Championship Paint Horse Show, which he has managed since 1993. This year’s show takes place June 26 through July 9 at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth. Equestrians from throughout the world will compete on more than 1,800 horses at the show, which is APHA’s premier showcase event for the breed.

APHA’s Mission

While APHA has grown tremendously over its 43-year history, it continues to follow the original mission established by its early founders. That mission is to:

• Collect, record and preserve the pedigrees of American Paint Horses
• Oversee matters related to the breeding and exhibition of those horses
• Create and maintain innovative programs that:
Increase the value of Paints
• Enrich members’ experiences with their horses
• Promote Paints and preserve their history
