Boomernicker, Randy Paul & Brumley Quarter Horses

Randy Paul & Boomernicker, owned by Brumley Quarter Horses & Rockland Reiners

Have you ever heard "Did you see that awesome horse" or "I don't want to miss that one go?"  At every major horse show there are a select few horses that never go unnoticed. Those special few whom everyone hangs around to watch warming up and rush to the show pen to catch their run.  The year 1997 was drawing to a close and trainers Randy Paul and Tracy Brumley, upon the request of friend and fellow horse trainer Brett Stone, went to the Stone Ranch to look at a two year old Boomernic colt. Brett had called Randy the night before telling him that he needed to look at this one and assured Randy that he would not be disappointed. Upon arrival at Stone Ranch, Brett escorted Randy to a stall where a small bay stud colt with a wild main, tail and eyes, stood. Brett pulled the colt out of the stall and after a brief look, Randy asked to ride him. Brett informed Randy that, "this one had only a half dozen or so rides on him."

Saddled and ready to ride, Randy and the colt stood in the arena. With one step up, Randy was mounted, with one step forward and the colt was off bucking across the arena. Randy stayed glued to the seat waiting for the colt to return to earth. After several leaps, the colt broke to a quiet lope until Randy brought him to a stop by the fence where his wife, Andi, Brett and Tracy stood wide eyed.

Anyone who knows Randy Paul can attest to his quiet easy-going nature, but the three spectators that day were not ready for his response to such a wild ride. Randy turned to Brett and with a smile said "We'll take him!" With that a partnership between Randy and Andi Paul and Brumley Quarter Horses was formed. A few months later, bronc rides over, this colt named Boomernicker was revealing everything Randy had hoped. To everyone's delight, Boomernicker, was proving Randy to be correct. They had in fact purchased a horse with all the talent to be a great one.

The pressure was now on. Boomernicker had the talent, looks and mind, but he was at a disadvantage. The colt had not been started until the end of his two year old year. Now, into his three year old year, Randy's task was to get him broke and teach him the reining maneuvers all in time to compete at reining's most prestigious event, the NRHA $100,000.00 Futurity, Oklahoma City.

Time seemed to fly by and suddenly it was September. Randy felt that before the trip to Oklahoma in November, Boomernicker's abilities needed to be tested. The decision was made to take him to the All American Quarter Horse Congress, held in Columbus, OH. The Congress is know all over the world as being one of the largest and toughest horse competitions. The Congress Reining Futurity brings out the best of the best in trainers and horses. Randy and Boomernicker's short year of training was put to the test in the first go of the Congress Open Futurity. To everyone's excitement, the team performed exceptionally, and out of 105 entries placed 14th in the first go and a guaranteed return to the finals.

There was no doubt in anyone's mind that this horse, even with his limited training, was in fact the "real deal!" Randy chose to ride Boomernicker somewhat conservatively in the final go of the Congress Open Futurity. The team ended up top ten and got to go home with a check for $3,838. Randy's confidence in the colt grew, but could the colt carry him to the finals at the NRHA Open Futurity. As tough as the All American Quarter Horse Congress is, it does not match up to the level of stress and strain the NRHA Futurity places on it's competitors. Two go-rounds and a finals over one weeks time is enough to wear on the minds and bodies of both riders and horses. Ask anyone who has been a part of the competition and they will tell you that it is a battle to survive as much as it is to win.

The 1998 NRHA $100,000.00 Open Futurity brought 395 entries. Boomernicker had proven himself in the minds of his owners, but now he had an even tougher accomplishment ahead. After the first go of the Futurity, everyone's excitement increased as Boomernicker placed 5th. A day later, the second go-round began and once again Boomernicker placed 5th, ensuring his place in the Open finals. Everyone could not have been more excited at that moment.  The small, wild colt purchased and started only one year previously was proving to everyone that he did not consider himself at a disadvantage and that he is in fact a phenomenal athlete with a great mind!

Finals night at the NRHA Futurity is probably the most anticipated evening of any reiner enthusiast. It is the completion of a great battle of stamina and the closing of another year. The pressure on that night's competitors is stifling. It has been a long week of work and stress to climax in one evening's performance. Boomernicker and Randy patiently wait their turn in the warm up pen. That is when it was heard "Did you see that awesome horse Randy's on. I don't want to miss that one go?" Boomernicker and Randy Paul rode that night with amazing determination. Blurring spins, effortless circles and ground crushing stops had the crowd screaming, cheering and whistling. After an emotional week of physical and mental stress the team triumphed to 6th place and a pay check of $35,631.37. Boomernicker had "arrived"!

Boomernicker and Randy Paul went on to win the 1999 ARHC Open Derby, the 1999 Hollywood Charity Horse Show Open Derby. They placed 1st in the first go of the 1999 National Reining Breeders Cup and placed in the top of every major Derby event finals. His accomplishments earned him life-time earnings of $72,127.54 and an AQHA ROM.

During Boomernicker's show career, he has been standing at 5B Quarter Horses in Arizona. Now that the decision has been made to retire this great horse to stud, he is being moved to stand in California at Valley Oak Ranch in Oakdale, under the guidance of top breeders Jerry and Melinda Black. "We are extremely excited at what we are seeing produced by Boomernicker," says Randy. "He is a remarkably dominant stallion and is stamping his mark on all his foals," quotes Tracy Brumley, Brumley Quarter Horses, " All the ones we have are put together just like they should be, attractive to look at, short backed, large hip and long low necks." Boomernicker's first foal crop are yearlings now. Next year everyone can look for Randy and Tracy to be mounted on Boomernicker offspring. You can guarantee this young stallion, who has stamped his mark on the reining history books as a performer, will also be right there as a producer as well!
