"Horse Lovers Park" Grand
Opening
April 28th & 29th
You won't want to miss this! There are two new world
class arenas at the facility formerly known as "Phoenix Equestrian
Center" (or Reach 11), located west of Tatum North of the CAP canal. One
is a cutting arena, and the other's state-of-the-art roping facility. The park
is capably managed by the Phoenix Parks and Recreational Department. The
ceremonies will begin at noon on Saturday April 28th in conjunction with an
AQHYA approved youth Show.
The cutting arena is called the "Dave Schuff
Arena", after the cutting aficionado and steel contractor who was largely
responsible for the design work on both arenas. The roping arena is named
"Horse Lovers Arena".
This wonderful upgrade for the existing equestrian center
was made possible by grants from a charitable foundation known as the
"Arizona Horse Lovers Foundation" the current President is Rick
Johns, who also chaired the planning committee for the new arenas.
This charitable foundation is the outgrowth of the old
Arizona Horse Lovers Club, which was established after W.W.II. The club had a
fine arena and clubhouse on Griswold, in North Phoenix, but was forced to sell
due to too many neighbors. If later purchased 10 acres on North 7th St. east of
the Sheriff Posse, and began to rebuild the club. The club never quite got
going again, so when the Gosnell Company wanted the land for the Points Tapetio
Resort, it was sold and the Directors formed the Arizona Horse Lovers
Foundation. The earnings from the principal go for equine related activities
and improvements, such as these fine arenas. It is hoped that this fine
facility will prove to be an affordable venue for many horse shows, cuttings
and ropings for years to come.
