AREA X YOUNG RIDERS

Gina Silverstri riding Rosie Sky to a 3rd place at Copper Meadows in California

The weather is heating up quickly as is the push to qualify for the North American Young Rider Championships (NAYRC) in August. Of the 16 Area X young riders, six are planning their strategy for the final few qualifying competitions available to them. Nick Cwick(AZ) is still trying to work out a last minute arrangement for a championship horse to ride, while Hannah Kirkham's(AZ) mom is spending many frustrating hours in communication with the British Equestrian Federation and the ASHA hoping to get approval for her to compete as a non-citizen if she should qualify. Meanwhile, the New Mexico girls are coming on strong. Justine Davis(NM) at 18 is the oldest and most experienced of the four. She needs just one more clean Preliminary ride to be on her way to competing at the NAYRC for the first time. Both Morgan McFeeley(NM) and Katy Anderson(NM) are hoping to fill their quota of clean Prelim rides at High Prairie Horse Trials in Colorado May 25-28 and one week later at Flagstaff's High Country Hounds Horse Trials. Ashley Arminjo(NM) has an even more grueling feat to accomplish for qualification with only one clean Prelim ride on her record and three to go before the July 24th deadline. With the long distances to travel and the scarcity of competitions in this part of the country, it is particularly difficult for these young riders.

CURRENT NEWS

We were saddened to hear of the untimely death of Pam Vining. She was deeply involved for a number of years with the YR group while her daughter, Jamie, was a member. We send our heartfelt condolences to Jamie and her family. Pam will be greatly missed.

Nick Cwick(AZ), Hannah Kirkham(AZ), and Gina Silvestri(AZ) were the only Area X YR who traveled to Copper Meadows in California. Competing in the Jr. Open Prelim division, Nick on For Kicks came in 2nd, while Gina, in her first ride at that level, rode Rosie Sky to an impressive 3rd place. Hannah withdrew after Brodie fell while jumping in the warm-up, no doubt, requiring the pair to muster up renewed courage for an aggressive Prelim ride at the upcoming Flagstaff competition.

Lucy Lippon(AZ) showed well at her second competition at Galway Downs in California last weekend. She brought home a 3rd place ribbon after out-riding four of the seven starters in the Novice Rider division. Jaima Atterholt(AZ) riding Training level at Galway is nursing an injured back after a nasty fall on cross-country. Her horse, Tango, came through it unscathed, however.

On the New Mexico front, the YR used tack sale fundraiser was a success, but the 1-day horse trial was canceled due to lack of entries.

We welcome new member Lydia Holdsworth(NM) of Santa Fe.
