What is a Futurity?

But what is a futurity? It is an event which the contestants are selected long beforehand. It all begins long before your foal is even a twinkle in your favorite stallion's eye. In a limited futurity like the ASBF, only offspring of the nominated stallions are eligible to compete. It is as easy as 1-2-3.

· STEP ONE - Breeding to a Nominated Stallion

The stallions are nominated by their owner by paying $150.00 to the futurity. The proceeds go into the futurity purse.

· STEP TWO - Nominate Your Mare

The next step of the process is nominating the mare to the Futurity for a nominal fee: after all the mare is an important aspect of the future foal. These nominations are made the same year the mare is bred and the proceeds also go into the Futurity purse. The ASBF Mare Nominations are $50.00 and are due October 1st of the same year that the mare is bred.

· STEP THREE - Nominating the Resulting Foal

When the foal is born, the mare owner now can decide which futurity classes to enter the foal. Each futurity class requires a nomination fee of $125.00 for weanlings and $125.00 for yearlings. This fee is paid in two payments in order to fit into everyone's budget.

The ASBF has classes grouped by age with early and late futurities, plus, separate filly and colt classes. There is also an amateur division. This gives everyone an opportunity to bring home the coveted blue ribbon and the futurity money.

Early and late weanling classes are separated by March 31st. Foals born before March 31st would enter in the early division and foals born after would enter the late division. For example, if you have a filly born April 1st, you would enter in the Late Filly division. If you had a colt born March 29th, you would enter him in the Early Colt division.

ASBF also offers an *open* futurity, with weanling and yearling halter classes, including buckskin and palomino classes for weanlings; yearling longe line, 2 year old western pleasure, 3 year old western pleasure, 4 & under hunter under saddle. The open classes offer incentives to horses by ASBF nominated stallions in many of the classes.

What Does ASBF have to Offer?

By purchasing a breeding to your favorite stallion, you will in turn have an opportunity to compete in the Arizona Stallion Breeders Futurity. A futurity limited to Arizona bred horses! There are early and late weanling futurities, yearling halter futurities and incentives for ASBF nominated horses throughout the yearling and older classes of the open futurities. What is the Payout? And What Does "Money Added" Mean?

Remember the entry fees mentioned above? Those fees, less the office charges go into a purse which is paid out according to placement in the class you entered, with 10% of the total purse paid back to the nominated stallion owners.

Most futurities have what they call "added" money. This is money included in the purse in addition to monies paid by the entry fee, generally donated from a corporate and/or individual sponsors.
