AQHA WORLD CHAMPIONS
TO OFFER CLINICS IN ARIZONA Coming in March! Arizona residents and horse enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to learn from two masters of the horse world. At the Pima County Fairgrounds, southeast of Tucson, World Champions Jay Lyn Wadhams, team roping, and Al Dunning, working cowhorse, will be presenting clinics in conjunction with the SAQHA Shamrock Show. Roping clinic will be held Thursday, March 14, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; free to observers, $200 to ride, all-day cattle charges included in the fee. Working cowhorse clinic will be held Sunday, March 17, 8 a.m. to noon; free to observers. Pima County Fairgrounds is located just south of the Houghton Rd exit form I-10. Please call (520) 647-7314 for information about either clinic.
FREE CLINIC WITH AL DUNNING Sponsored by the Arizona Quarter Horse Association, with the assistance of the American Quarter Horse Association, world champion Al Dunning will offer a four-hour clinic on working cowhorse. Working cowhorse is a challenging multiple skill class. Not only is the horse required to demonstrate the rein control and athletic maneuvers of the reining horse - sliding stops, lead changes, spins, rollbacks, fast and slow circles, the horse must also demonstrate the cow savvy and ability used to handle cattle. After the reining portion of the class, the 'dry-work,' a single cow is turned loose in the arena and the rider must demonstrate the horse's ability to hold the cow, turn the cow along the fence and circle the cow in the middle of the arena. A multiple world champion, AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year, and AQHA Judge, Al Dunning has extensive experience training and exhibiting world champions from his days as a youth exhibitor to his current specialties in reining, cutting and working cowhorse. Al will demonstrate both training techniques and the correct maneuvers to score high in cowhorse classes.
ROPING CLINIC WITH JAY LYN WADHAMS Fresh from a world championship in heeling and a reserve world championship in heading at the 2001 AQHA World Show, Jay Lyn Wadhams will be offering an all-day clinic on team roping. Perhaps better known as J.D. Yates' cousin and header or heeler, Jay has an extensive background both showing Quarter Horses and roping for time in rodeos across the country. Jay's clinic is limited to 20 participants and open to all observers. Participants will spend about an hour working on roping techniques using roping dummies, then the rest of the day will be spent actually roping. This is a great opportunity to work on your horse's technique as well as your roping skills. The $200 fee for participants will include all cattle charges for the day of roping. Registration is first-come, first-served. Please call (520) 647-7314 to register. | |||||||
