Festival of Driving return on April 20th at Westworld in Scottsdale. Just when we thought we could rest from competition, we have another event to prepare for: The return of the Festival of Driving at West World. This is a one-day event devoted strictly to carriage driving with nearly 30 classes ranging from 'Single Pleasure - Open, Ladies to Drive' to 'Jack Benny Pleasure - Oldest Horse and Driver Combination' and all the fun classes of pole bending, barrel racing, obstacles and gamblers choice. It is a great event for those who are interested in driving or just want to watch beautiful horses and carriages. A variety of vehicles and harness will be found as well as the many different breeds of horses, ponies, mules and minis. Contestants, dressed in their finest can be seen as well as classes for the work horse/mule (log skidding) to display skills all but lost to modern technology. A special trophy- The Boney Roney Challenge Trophy, in honor of Boney Roney who was high point winner at the driving festival in 1994 and 1995. This award will be given to the equine that has the highest total score in Reinsmanship, Gamblers Choice and Obstacle Classes. Barbara Nees and TNT Mules and Morgans sponsor this trophy. Bony Roney was virtually undefeated in all of the obstacle and speed events both years and in 1995, he achieved high point horse with his driver and trainer, Barbara Nees winning high point driver. For entry form and information contact Mary Anne Boyden at 480-502-1360, mboyden@earthlink.net. Cost is $8 per class and entries close April 6, 2002. Post entries are $10 per class. Stabling is available Friday night but not Saturday night. Check in starts at 8 a.m., with event beginning at 9 a.m. Although a smaller field of contestants, the 2002 Arizona CDE, held at the Goree Farms in Coolidge, Az, was still a success. In fact, the smaller group of entries, 44, made the whole event friendlier. We were prepared for the 60+ entries of last year, but recent events and economy must have kept some people at home. However, the pluses were that each day's event was over earlier with more time to socialize and recuperate, Enno Georg, President of the Jury and the rest of the members were very generous, the weather was very cooperative (except for that rain and wind storm Thursday night), and the horses, as always, were beautiful. Big hearty thanks goes to all the faithful volunteers and the enormous work you put forth. Every one of you is important and needed. Thank you also, Bob and Marybeth Goree for the generous use of your farm and facilities and all the hours of work you have done for the club and event. For a full account of the event, look in next months Bridle and Bit. Below is a list of class winners, places and total points: Class 1 MINIATURE HORSES 1.
