Arizona Dream Catcher Equestrians Take the Heat to California

by Christina Vanda

For the third year in a row the Dream Catcher Delegation took the heat to California, showing in the 15th annual CALNET show for riders with disabilities. This horse show is the second largest of its kind in the United States hosting over 150 riders from across the country. The two day event offered classes in English and western equitation, dressage, futures, Challenge Cup, pole bending, obstacle and everyone's favorite, costume. Our group consisting of 15 riders, coaches and family members, along with the 5 horses had a wonderful time as always. This has become an important annual event for our riders, offering competition away from our home turf, renewing old friendships, and creating new ones. Not only did Dream Catchers ride, but did a lot of exploring in Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the beach. Although this show is a great deal of fun it takes a tremendous amount of work from our volunteers, bathing and grooming, schooling, loading and driving. Without these dedicated people this experience would not be possible for our challenged riders.

Arizona Dream Catcher Equestrians are now preparing for this first week session at their summer camp near Showlow June 17-22. Our inclusive summer camp offers a unique approach to family camping, by providing students and their families the opportunity to enjoy the western lifestyle together. The program offers daily riding, arts and crafts, educational clinics, recreation and lots of socialization and fun. The camp utilizes volunteers from several areas, work programs, pubic schools, 4-H and our Dream Keeper youth program from the east valley. The camp continues to be offered free of charge due to the dedication of a active Board of Directors. Offering these services at no charge to our students continues to be the priority fundraising goal of our organization. Dream Catchers along with another non-profit organizations have felt the financial crunch this year. We have developed new and inventive fundraising events along with our annual golf tournament, Formal Ball and bowl-a-thon in addition to increasing our grant writing efforts. Donations are always welcome and tax deductible. For information contact, Christina Vanda at 602-702-9175 or Tammy Rohn at 602-448-9043.
