CUTTING AWARDS BANQUET A SMASH!!

The Cave Creek, AZ. Cutting Club held its Annual Banquet on Saturday, May 18 at Pinnacle Peak Patio Steak House. The evening began with a cash bar and bidding on many lovely Silent Auction items. Club President Kim McElroy gave the blessing prior to a very hearty meal. After a few door prizes were given away, the real excitement began as the top six finishers in each class were presented their awards. Class winners received a silver belt buckle from Red Bluff Buckles in New Mexico. The buckles featured the club name in gold at the top, the name of the class won across the bottom, the year in the center in black, and a cutter and cow motif, all accented by two small blue stones and a diamond chip. Club member Jim Long has designed the buckles for the second year now. Second place finishers received a pair of spur straps custom made for the Club by K.O. Trading in Texas. The straps featured the Club logo set in silver on antique brown conchos and silver spots around the edges of the straps. Those in third place were treated to a pair of white Classic Equine sports medicine boots, donated by Tack et Cetera in Cave Creek. Fourth place finishers took home an antique brown hoof-pick that definitely looked too nice to use, with silver bars and the Club logo on it in silver. Fifth place was presented a 60 day supply of Color Bright Coat Supplement from Calico Animal Care Products in Globe, Arizona. The sixth place cutters took home an antique brown, tear drop shaped key chain with silver spots and the Club logo in silver.
Club Vice President Dr. Terry Gammill, was the emcee of the evening while Board Members assisted with the handing out of the prizes. As the awards were presented, photographer Kim Cook snapped photos of the lucky winners while cutters and guests continued to bid at the Silent Auction. Special honorees were acknowledged as well as the cutters. Club Point Secretary Betty Knight was presented with a jacket embroidered with the Club logo and her official title. Club officers, Board Members and special volunteers received custom made wood picture frames, adorned with barbed wire and burned-in brands. The frames were created by Teran Broberg of Whip en Spur Enterprises.
The High Point Rider of the year receives the official NCHA trophy, a resin statue of a cutter and cow mounted on a wood base. This award was sponsored by Owen Moorhead of First Arizona Savings. The year’s winner was Scott Brems who showed his gelding ‘Dr. Norton’ consistently throughout the season to the top spot. In a tie for the Reserve High Point spot were Cheryl Lenox and Rebecca Tussing.
The High Point Horse award this year was a beautiful headstall with silver spots, buckles lettered with ‘High Point Horse’ and conchos with the Club logo on them. This award was also sponsored by First Arizona Savings. ‘Dr. Norton’ owned and shown by Scott Brems was the winner. In the reserve High Point slot was ‘Lenas Smokin’ Chance’ owned and shown by Cheryl Lenox.
The Cave Creek Cutting Club has always been fond of rewarding its volunteer work force for their efforts throughout the show season. A most coveted prize is the Volunteer of the Year belt buckle which is presented to the non-showing volunteer deemed most deserving as voted on by the membership. This year’s recipient was Cindy Alvarez who helped tirelessly at the cuttings taking entries, keeping track of results, handing out water and making sure things ran smoothly!
Another fun portion of the evening was the Voted On Plaques presentation. Pairs of Club members were asked to come to the podium and read the nominees for each category. Then, in true Academy Award style, they asked for the envelope, tore it open, and announced ‘And the winners!’ Award winners came forward to accept their plaque and really hammed it up with the acceptance speeches! Rookie of the Year went to Jesse Schmid of Paradise Valley, who in his first season of competition, finished in the standings in two classes. Most Improved Cutter was Scott Brems of Phoenix, who in his second season at the reins, was High Point Horse and High Point Rider. Good Sportsman went to Dr. Terry Gammill for the second year in a row, a most deserving recipient. Dr. Gammill was also named the Most Persistent Cutter, as he showed both his horses in many classes at every show! A new award this year was the Herd Helper of the Year. While all the regular herd helpers received therapeutic Wyngz Saddle Pads courtesy of Horse Sportz in Cave Creek, the cutters felt they should honor the herd helper who really set the standard throughout the year. This year’s winner was Floyd Brooks. In addition to his plaque, Floyd was presented with a gallon jug ready to strap to his saddle, fitted with a horse-size catheter so he wouldn’t have to leave the arena so often next season!
