Applications open for groups to participate and celebrate this year’s “Champions of the Community” theme

SCOTTSDALE, AZ –Arizona Coyotes legend Shane Doan will be the Grand Marshal of the 47th Annual National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade on December 30, 2017. As Grand Marshal, Doan will lead this year’s parade through the two-mile parade route in central Phoenix.

The National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade Grand Marshal honors an individual or group whose vision aligns with the Fiesta Bowl’s commitment to the community. During his career, Doan’s impact on the ice was immeasurable and his contributions to the Valley and desire to grow the game of hockey in Arizona have made him a true champion of the community, aligning with this year’s Parade theme.

“The Fiesta Bowl Parade is an Arizona icon and I’m honored to serve as this year’s Grand Marshal. During my playing career, I never had the chance to experience the Fiesta Bowl Parade and, for my first one, it’ll be incredible to lead the way,” Doan said. “Arizona is a special community and since I first moved here 20 years ago, the people have welcomed me with open arms. We’re proud to call it our home and give back in any way we can.”

Doan is the longest-term professional athlete in Arizona history, spending 20 years in the Valley with Coyotes. Drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995, Doan made the move with the team when they relocated to the Valley and spent 21 years as a Phoenix/Arizona Coyote, announcing his retirement last week. As one of the most decorated players and captains in hockey history, Doan is the all-time leader in many categories for the Winnipeg Jets/Arizona Coyotes franchise including, 1,540 games, 402 goals, 570 assists and 128 power-play goals.

“Shane Doan has been a first-class ambassador for the state of Arizona throughout his career, both on and off the ice. He is the perfect choice to be Grand Marshal for this year’s parade as he represents the values of the Fiesta Bowl organization,” said Mike Nealy, executive director of the Fiesta Bowl.

Every year, a combination of more than 2,500 men, women, children, floats, balloons and animals participate in the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade. The Fiesta Bowl once again invites and encourages groups to submit an application by September 22, 2017, to be a part of the 47th Annual National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade.

“Part of what makes the Parade so special is that groups from within our community get to be a part of the parade and each year, the event comes together as a direct result of the community, the dedicated volunteers and the support from National Bank of Arizona and 3TV,” Nealy said.

Groups from Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and the competing universities in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl create unique parade floats, march in high school and university bands, celebrate equestrian displays, drive specialty cars, perform and join more than 100,000 fans to take part in the experience. This year, the parade will pay tribute to the Valley of the Sun through the “Champions of the Community” theme.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on December 30, 2017, the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade will showcase a pageantry of brilliantly colored floats, giant balloons, equestrian units, charitable groups, local celebrities and marching bands that will make their way down the two-mile route through central Phoenix. Admission is free to the public with premium and reserved seating available for $25. The event is broadcast live on 3TV.

First staged in 1972, the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade is one of the Valley’s long-standing traditions and for the fourth consecutive year, the Fiesta Bowl will partner with National Bank of Arizona as title sponsor.

“We are thrilled to be back as title partner for the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade,” said Curt Hansen, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at National Bank of Arizona. “Building community is a primary focus for NB|AZ and by continuing to partner with the Fiesta Bowl in this Valley tradition, we are supporting the thousands of volunteers, participants, organizations and fans that make this event so special.”

The National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade will begin a day filled with Fiesta Bowl festivities leading up to the 47th Annual PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m.
