DEF and You Truck Talk Tip of the Month

Nate Brekken  | Published on 4/7/2018

DEF is Diesel Exhaust Fluid. If you own a pickup truck that is newer you probably have a DEF tank on your truck.  This tank is used to house the DEF fluid that is sprayed into your exhaust system.  Yes, you read this right - this fluid is sprayed into your exhaust system. Why do the manufactures use this product?
During the combustion process NOx gases are formed from the immense heat of the combustion process.
The DEF fluid is sprayed into your exhaust system, converting the NOx gases into nitrogen and water vapor - two harmless and naturally occurring components of the air we inhale every day.
Most DEF tanks are a 5 gallon capacity, while some of the newer trucks have a 7.5-gallon capacity.
The amount of usage of this fluid is based on how you use your truck. If you tow often, you will use more fluid. If you use your truck more for daily driving, less fluid will be used.
Typically, the hotter your truck runs, or is being worked, the more fluid you will use.
Cost of DEF varies per location. Stop by Strictly Diesel, we have plenty of DEF on hand to top your system off, or repair it if need be.
