Corey Cushing graces the May 2022 cover of Bridle & Bit after becoming a 3-time World's Greatest Horseman — a feat only Russell Dilday has accomplished before him, all three times on Topsails Rein Maker. In this wide-ranging feature, Corey discusses joining the Teton Ridge team, moving to Texas, the DT Horses Western Derby at WestWorld, his surprise cameo on Yellowstone, coaching Andrea Fappani in cow horse, and the pride he feels watching son Caleb Cushing rise in the sport.
The DT Horses Western Derby & NRCHA Growth
QWhat can folks expect to see at the DT Western Derby now it's 3rd year at WestWorld?
A

At all three premier events this year there have been over 200 entries in just the Open Derby alone. The Tres Osos Derby in February that runs along with the World's Greatest, the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas, and the now the DT Horses Western Derby in Scottsdale have all had over 200 entries in the Open Derby. That has been an over 30% growth if I remember it correctly, compared to last year.

Because of the growth, we have reconstructed our pens and the event competition layout. The Equidome is going to be for the Reining and Fence Work only. Also because of the growth we have to set up a permanent Cutting pen in the North Hall. That is something that will be new and will make the experience even better. We will have the perfect back drop, the perfect sized pen and the perfect ground to have a better show. By having those pens set up for the specifically for those events, we won't have to run any horse show classes in the North Hall.

QThe exposure on Yellowstone for working cow horse — what kind of impact is that having on the sport?
A

It's amazing! A big Thank You to Taylor and Nicole Sheridan for everything that they do in supporting this with The Run for A Million and even the added money at the qualifiers. We had over 90 Bridle Horses at the Run for A Million qualifier at the Stallion Stakes event this year. I am just going to say this, that with that growth there will be just as many entries for this next qualifier at the DT Horses Western Derby, where they will take the next 8 guys back. Guys will be bringing more horses for more opportunities to make that Top 8. The NRCHA is always looking for what's coming, or what has become a problem and we try to stay ahead of it the best that we can.

QSum up the name Taylor Sheridan in three words.
A

Visionary — Confident — Believer

QYou had a small speaking part on Yellowstone — what did your family think about that?
A

They said to me, "Why are you training horses? You should be an actor!" They did not really say that! Really, they were just excited. It is neat when you may not have heard from a friend in a long time and they just give you a "High Five" thru a text a phone call or something like that. The one scene they had to retake like 4 or 5 times. I was probably messing it up. It was fun and it's something kinda cool and not something that every person gets to have in their life. I am very honored and thankful that I got the opportunity on such an incredible TV Show. We are getting publicity thru Yellowstone and TRFAM, but I myself for Yellowstone, have not heard if they want me back or anything like that, since then.

NRCHA Presidency & the 3x World's Greatest Horseman Title
QAs the past and present President of NRCHA, are you satisfied with the direction the Association is headed?
A

Absolutely! Between the growth and the numbers, the conversations that we have in our board meetings where we are looking towards the future, not just sitting back and kicking our feet up and going, "Well everything seems to be going pretty good, OK nothing else to talk about." We are always talking about what can be next. How can it be bigger? How can it be better? Along the way it makes for challenges, but we have been able to work thru it and we all have learned a lot along the way. We plan to keep going in that direction.

QBesides you, has anyone ever won the World's Greatest Horseman 3-times — what are three keys you can share with our readers to achieving that accomplishment?
A

Russell Dilday won it all three times on Topsails Rein Maker. Patience, time and consistency is what it take to create a World's Greatest horse!

QHow does it feel to have achieved that goal?
A

Honored. I had three different customers that trusted my program. I have so many great customers that trust my judgement and plan. It always doesn't go according to plan, but they allow me the time to be creative and work thru challenges as they come about. Really I am honored more than anything.

Joining Teton Ridge & Moving to Texas
QYou joined the Teton Ridge Team and moved to Texas — why?
A

Opportunity is the #1 reason, and this is going to be a great next chapter in life for me and my family. I am in the middle of moving right now. It is super exciting! Stressful too. I mean as we speak, I have got 33 horses driving down the road, on five rigs and four cows. We all left starting at 2am this morning. We left in waves, kinda in shifts, and right now the first truck is not too far from pulling into the ranch. Right now I am in Abilene, so about an hour and a half to go for us. My family will move out after the Western Derby because of school. It was time for me to get going and start this next chapter.

QTeton Ridge has become a major player over-night. How do you feel about that?
A

I love it! What they are going to do for the industry, what they have created, what they are creating is just great. They are fantastic. They are only out there to make the Western Lifestyle that much better.

Coaching Andrea Fappani & Son Caleb
QRecently you were coaching Andrea Fappani in cow horse at the Sun Circuit, and he looked pretty solid — what's up with that?
A

It is a personal goal for him. That was his first Cow Horse that you saw at the Sun Circuit, and he bought that horse himself with his own money. Teton Ridge was excited for his interest in it and wanting to do it and they are supporting him in it too. This is all up to him, this is his. You know how Andrea is, he has a goal in mind. Being the great rider that he is, he is learning to become a better listener. We have had a lot of fun together with him coming over and taking lessons. It has helped me, to be honest, too. We are always picking each others brains while having a lot of fun. From what he tells me, it is a big release for him.

It was exciting to see Andrea at Sun Circuit because it was a collaboration between two really great horseman! The Teton Ridge Team was working together.

QYour son Caleb is making his mark in the horse world — how does that make you feel?
A

I do not know the words beyond proud! I don't know what that word is for both Kristen and I. Because it is out livelihood, and because we grew up doing it, we defiantly wanted him to at least give it a try. If he wants to keep moving forward, we left it up to him. Yes, he has been blessed with an awesome horse, and that horse has been in our lives for a long time and means so much to us. When the opportunity arose that on day it could be Caleb's horse, and what those two have achieved so far and how much joy it gives us to watch him. It is words beyond proud for us as parents.

He has been out there and GT has just been taking care of him. And it started to effect him a little bit, but now he is starting to understand the importance of how to hold your hand, when do you use your leg and little things like that, that have really raised the bar for him. It's exciting because I know that he can do things, but just like everything, he has got to work on it. He has a great horse, and opportunities to ride with everyone. All of our friends are constantly giving him help, or maybe a lesson, or a little tip here and there. It is so cool to see that and how he knows that is just going to make him a better horseman.
